I'll be walking two black standard poodles in the doggy parade at the Riverfest (http://www.narrowsburg.org/) in Narrowsburg in a couple weeks and I need an idea for costumes. I know we have some creative people in here, so I wondered if you might help me out with an idea.

Dress them up as goats? ;)

About 15 years ago my wife and I took our dog, a brindle cairn terrier, who was a dead ringer for Toto, to the Judy Garland Festival in Grand Rapids, MN. There is a complete historical center in the small town dedicated to Garland (her birthplace) and the Wizard of OZ, and all the kids just loved our dog, calling out, "Hey, there's Toto".

So the parade starts and floats move down the small main street, one of which is carrying all the stars of the Wizard - Dorothy, Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, - but no Toto! Just as I am remarking to my wife about the obvious omission, this old tank commander hears the strangely familiar sound of center guides against roadwheels. I look town the road and sure enough - a tank is in the parade. Apparantly the local guard unit misses no opportunity to take the old pile of iron for a ride however remote the association of armored vehicles with the event.

So I guess the precedent has been set - you could dress your dogs as tank crew members. :D

Narrowsburg?!!! I go canoeing on the Delaware up there. :D

Paint white stipes on them and go as zebras.

Riverfest?... maybe you can fit them with life vests and helmets, an oar and an inflatable raft.

Whatever you do make sure they are comfortable and don't forget to come back and post a picture.

Use some washable spray hair color and make 'em skunks.

You know what? That was exactly what I was thinking! But I don't know if you can get a black poodle's hair white.

Ken, I posted the link to where it's at in case anyone might be nearby and want to show up. I'll be easily recognizable. ;)

The other dog I'm taking is Stella, the one I babysit for sometimes. She's just turned eight and she's kinda salt-and-peppery colored now, and looks like she could be Alices grandmother, which is another thing I was thinking of playing on as some kind of costume theme for them if I can think of something. Stella's mom is on the committee, which is why I'm going to have both dogs. I will most likely have someone walk with me too. We may or may not wear costumes.

I do plan on taking pictures, but will only post them if one of the mods will make sure that no one photochops it!

Keep the suggestions coming! Thanks for the help! :)

You wear a skirt fixed up to look like a stagecoach and harness the two dogs, with manes attatched, to act as horses.

Pirates! Didn't I post a pic or two of dogs dressed as pirates in the Cove a while back? :D

Fix one up as a cat and the other as a mouse. It would really work if one is dominant over the other.

Thanks for the suggestions. I don't think I could get a poodle to look like a cat though. We want them to look pretty or cute, because they are going to be all groomed nice and stuff. I'm trying to think of a way to have them impersonate some famous people or something. Or maybe have them go all punk or hippyish or something.

Still needing ideas!

Put a poofy pink fifties skirt on the dogs with an out line of a person instead of a poodle, a person skirt instead of a poodle skirt. ;)

Well, Josh is most likely going to be with me, and he's all for the "punk" idea. We need to run it by Stella's mom, of course, but it would be easy and they'd look cool.

Anyone know how to spike up a poodle's hair or where to get colored, washable hairspray? The rest I think I can take care of!
