I've been planning this one for a couple of weeks now. I'm still working on the ultimate hunting/fishing/canoing/mountain biking/just have in the jeep, knife/hatchet/machette....whew!

The hawks were OK but need more. The hatchet is OK but needs more. The machetes were OK but need more....so I came up with a list!

Bow and muzzle loader hunting. A heavy chopping blade with a spike poll to start tree steps (Great idea Bill just needs more)

Canoing. A heavy chopping blade.

Fishing. A heavy chopping blade and at times a spike poll to tie up to dead trees and logs. This also means a lanyard hole in the back. As long as I'm doing it I might as well make it so I can use it as an emergency anchor. This means a solid one piece construction with no wood.

Mountain biking. Beats me why but I had to throw it in because I spend a lot of time on the bike.

Just have in the Jeep. That brings up a lot of issues. Number one, when thinking of the most important emergency tool other than a sharp blade, I decided on a pry bar. OK, that takes care of the steel handle, the spike poll to break windows, Add a fine cutting section to the blade for a seat belt cutter.

Length....Max of 20 inches. Weight...I sure would like to be able to carry it.

I have a pretty good idea of the shape but would like input as to what other features it could incorporate.

Thanks and Ideas please!

Thats a hard one...

hard to think of one tool that can do everything well....the trade-offs cause the tool design to become one where it can do many things but only so-so well...

like a Leatherman...it's a handy tool, and I love mine, but it is not the best at anything it does...

I agree. This will be a better chopper than anything elso though. Let me give you an idea of where it is now. I bought a 20 pry bar, 3/4". I cut the end off the hook so I just had round steel. The hook was forged into the spike poll.

From the hook, I forged the bar to a flat edge to prepare for a full grind. The width of this section is now about 2.25 inches. This will be the chopping section.

The last inch of the chopping section was forged out an additional half inch to make a finer blade.

The total length of this blade is 10" from the hoop to the plunge cut . After that it is still round and goes to the pry bar end that was already on it.

I'll throw out some of my thoughts on it.

1. To be an effective chopper the balance has to be towards the head. Forging from a crowbar puts too much weight in the handle if you ask me.
2. I think a spike of the right length and shape would work for most prying just fine, so you can kill 2 birds with one stone there. It just has to be inline with the top of the blade so you can get it underneath stuff.Kind of a flat top bearded hawk I suppose.
3. I think I'd leave off the seatbelt cutter and just plan on the hatchet having a good enough edge for it. You only want one sharp edge to keep track of in that sort of situation. Having a line cutter/gut hook type slot would be neat but you'd be dragging the main edge across them in the process. Instead I think I'd put a nick in for pulling nails.

Really I think I'd go for a normal T shape, traditional hawk design. Put a heavy blade on it, kind of like an Estwing hatchet with a spike. Make the handle out of a peice of thick wall steel pipe, and weld it together, thread the bottom for a cap and then you can store the lanyard inside it, and put a ring or whatever you want on the bottom.

Here's what I'd make if I was capable :D

All of the above but put a gun barrel in the handle for killing gators and pythons
Bruce, you aren't going to believe the new ML I have in the works. A double 4 bore Howdah pistol. Barrel length 12 inches and twin underhammers with duel triggers.
That'll get you a seat at the bar on Saturday night!

I like where this is going!! Now you just need to make a way to attach the shovel feature. Maybe in the pouch.

P.S Peter if you dont invite me up to see your work im going to invite myself. You can pick me up somewhere fairly close and blindfold me till we get to the hideout if you want.:D

Just kidding

Yep: 12GA. saw off with a sword on one end and a hawk on the other. That way you can get them coming and going.  :D ;) :p

George, if you get em coming they aren't going anywhere.
12 ga nothing....one of the nice things about ML's is I can make them as big and short as I want without uncle Fud's kind permission....This one's 4 bore(ga) made from hydraulic tubing and the flats planed in with my handy dandy 2X72 grinder. If you think plunge grinds are a pain in the a$$, try to keep 8 flats straight on that chunk of steel! :p

Now that I look at it DaQo'tah, I like that Klingon thingie you have in your avatar more and more. Wonder how that would skin deer!:D :footinmou

Forgot the most important tool for the true outdoorsman...the beer bottle opener...
