I have a stainless steel fixed blade that has taken some hard knocks, and the blade has some chips right along the edge. Can anyboby suggest a way to repair the edge, without puting it to a power grinder. The chips are very small. I was thinking that if I used a good whetstone I could work them out, but i din't know.

Try a lansky..

I fixed my BM 721 with it after I cut some electrical wire with it while the power was on..

If you have stones already, it's a relatively common practice to place 180 or 220 grit wet/dry or crocus clothe over them to act as a low grit stone.

Just take your time (to keep the temperature down) and removing enough metal while maintaining the blades shape should be easy.

Holy smokes, that could have been your life, never mind the chip   .

As to the chipped edge, a coarse benchstone and patients is your ticket.

If the chipping is minor and it doesn't interfere much with what I'm using the knife for I just wait until they are removed by normal sharpening. No use taking off metal if I really don't need to.

I repair every badly chipped knife I buy with plain old elbow grease (and a sharpener). I love taking a good- abused knife and giving it new life. Some of the best deals in knives are good knives that take an hour or three to fix but can be had for a fraction of MSRP.
