Need Info- Buck Kalingas

I've seen several of these come up for sale recently and wondered just when Buck quit making them. Also, at the USA on the blade, some have an x, some have an inverted u and some have nothing. Some come in display cases, some don't. Just wondered about all this. Bruce

Bruce,
We discontinued the Kalinga in 1997.

The little marks you are seeing are date codes. The X is for knives made in 1990 and the upside down u is for 1997. They came in a fancy leather sheath with a box. Earlier ones had handles of black micarta. The rarest production ones had red micarta handles. Earlier boxes were made of wood i have heard. This was probably Al Buck's favorite knife as he named his boat the Kalinga!
Hope this helps,

Dennis,
You show off!

You are right that Kalingas with mother of pearl are not too common. I know a few guys looking for one, they have been for a few years now!

Is that a wood box with a lock?
Thanks,

Dennis, Very nice knife! Personally, I really like the style and would be interested in seeing all the different custom versions Buck did on these over the years. Bruce
