This was originally posted in the BL-ID forum but I was unaware of this fine area. I found this on the coast of Oregon yesterday and the thing that stuck me most was the sharply squared off nose of the blade. As opposed to all others I have seen rounded. Has anyone ever seen this as a variation? Could this have been an earlier knife than WWII. I know it's very similar to the WWII issue but the tang stamp spans 1919-1946? Any info you all have would be deeply appreciated.

Yes, thank you I found that site helpful. I'm still wondering about the peculiar blade shape at the tip and have seen no information.

I have 5 of these knives, have seen many more and have never seen 1 where the tip is shaved at an angle rather than being rounded off. My 2 cents worth is that some previous owner put a file or grinder to the round leading tip and shaved it off for some reason. I could be wrong about that. I've been that before. :D

Was considering that to be a possibility. If so, it was done a very long time ago.

Those are the original blade. Search 'Lifeboat Knives' and see if you can't see some more photos like yours. That is the shape of "old" rope knives also, you should be able to find some photos of them with fancy rope work attached to the shackle. Yes, that style could be WWI. I believe that is a very old Cami tang stamp. Somewhere here those are listed.

Regular readers here wonder, why is a Buck 300 person opening his mouth here ? Well, the first Buck folding knife was made just after WW2 using these knives as the body and H. Buck hand forged a replacement blade in his small San Diego workshop. He sold a hundred or so back then. He got them at surplus sales from old life rafts. Today if you have one ,I will be honest with you, you have a knife worth 3 numbers in heavy used shape, 4 if its still new like the one below. Watch for fakes....back when I was crazy, I bid 350 on one with a really used blade, and lost. But, I am better now and don't have to have one...ha

Took some searching but there's another one. I try not to get bummed if my instincts are wrong, but it's nice to know when they are closer to correct. This one even has an earlier looking bolster than mine. At any rate, the blade just seemed so original and it's nice to see the earlier variation out there. Maybe not all the way back to WWI but not far off. Thanks 300!
