Like "Rifter" on the other thread I also need some advice on what gear to purchase, looking for a good pair of boots, something in the "Danner" category, for mountain trekking and a coat/jacket to go along with it, I'd like the jacket to be camouflaged, something in the line of a sniper smock,(waterproof/windproof) if you could also give me the website aswell guys. Thank god for the miracle that is the internet.

If you want good boots just get some danners. I have 2 pairs and they are the best boots i have even owned. As for jackets i have seen people say nothing but good things about the cabela's gore-tex jackets, im unsure if you can get them in camo though. My GF has one of them and it is very well made and keeps you dry and warm. They will be what i purchase if i ever wear out my Used surplus M-65 i bought a while ago, i bought it cause it was cheap and warm and i planned on getting a good gore-tex jacket when it wore out but i cant seem to kill it. While the M65 is not watrproof it is water resistant and if you have the liner on it will help keep the water from soaking though.

Hi there

I realy don't recomend Danners for rough/mountain use. I used to own a pair of Acadias but after moving to Scotland I found them nowhere near supportive enough for rough ground. The leather seemed to dammage/scratch very easily, ok for around town or flat countryside but not good for the hills. Generally I was very dissapointed with their perfomance.

I sold the Acadias on Ebay and replaced them with a pair of Lowa military boots from SOF Military I think Silvermans sell them now too. I highly recomend them, much better suited to rough terrain and far better value for money than Danner (especially in the UK)

As for jackets 90% of the time I wear a snowsled over-the-head type ventile smock, shell in winter on its own as a shirt in summer, (lost the link for snowsled) but Westwinds have very similar offerings, and a bit cheaper.

If you're after a more military type waterproof/breathable jacket I recomend Arktis I don't own one of the jackets, but do own a pair of the waterproof trousers, very tough and of excellent quality, very comfortable.

Hope I helped

Will

How does the ventile do in our climate? Received wisdom suggests that it's best in cold and dry. I've heard that it becomes cold if it gets wet through prolonged wetting, like we get in the UK, also takes age to dry.

I've looked at the snowsled and westwinds but am not sure about splashing out that much money for something that won't do the job. Incidentally I've got an Arktis waterproof jacket, which was dear but does the biz!

Hello

Ventile works pretty well in the wet, over the top of a fleece or wool shirt it is as good as waterproof. It is cold to wear if in very wet weather and the fabric is worn next to the skin, but thats a pretty rare situation.

It dries out quite quick actually, I timed it once fromm completely soaked (after washing) to dry, hanging outside, took just over an hour, but it never realy gets that drenched while wearing it, and dries a lot quicker while being worn.

I have heard that double layer and triple layer ventile can be considered waterproof, but for the few years I've had it my single layer smock has been good enough;)

Another brand that interests me is Paramo, in particular the cascada jacket, anyone tried their stuff? They use the Nickwax Analogy system which dosen't rely on coatings/laminates. I have a Paramo trail cap which is great, very clever system.

cheers
I might just give it a try, although my 16 quid pertex windshirt does the job pretty well for much of the year. Haven't tried paramo yet but like you I've heard good things. The reason I'm interested in the ventile is it's ability to handle some of the things that quickly destroy synthetics, like brambles and sparks from the fire.

Will's right. Danners are crap for the UK.

Nicely put Nick, I didn't want to say it seeing as how danner seem to have quite a fan club on BF:D

Horse's for course's mate, Danner's are well made, hard wearing...ish and not too bad on the comfort front. I, like your good self, got a bit sucked in and got a pair of Acadias, took them out in the mud cleaned them and then only ever used them indoors for work.VIBRAM RULES UK.:D

For the best in jackets check out the King of the Mountain wool jackets. Excellent in all weather.

For boots I wear Danners, have for about 8 years now, work great.

My four favorite pairs of boots are: Danner, Danner, Danner, and, uh, Danner. Too bad there are no mountains in Southeast Texas. Living in a temperate area, I have little experience with jackets; I read this thread to get advice on that. Friends of mine who are active hunting/canoeing/snowshoeing in Maine recommend Filson clothing. If Robert H recommends something, I know it is good, also.
