Need info on Buck 301 Stockman

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the actual blade length is on the Buck 301 Stockman?

I am looking for a nice EDC slipjoint at present and have been having a very hard time finding out what the actual blade lengths are on the various knives. I have looked at Buck's website, I have Googled, and I have tried searching the forums here. All the information I have found so far relates to overall knife length and not blade length.

What I am in need of is a well made, (preferably Buck) slipjoint with a blade length of less than 3 inches.

Until recently I have been EDC-ing a Buck 110. However, things on the knife front are a little strained here in Scotland at the moment. There is currently a knife amnesty in operation and people are being asked to hand in their knives for destruction! :eek:

The government is also strengthening its stance on knife carrying so I figure that until things calm down again I would rather stay inside the letter of the law and carry something which is considered "legal". Thus the quest for a non-locking, folding, sub 3" bladed, inoffensive looking pocket knife!

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

I hear you Maverick.

It takes the cake when we are reduced to carrying something that's not entirely practical simply because our government would rather be seen to be tackling crime than actually addressing the issues behind it. I would far rather keep using the good old 110 due to the feeling of security I get from having the blade locked.

Seems pretty crazy to me that the one tool which is probably most responsible for the development of our civilisation is the same tool which is being blamed for its decline here.

Having lived through the last amnesty during the Operation Blade period, I can only hope that the same thing happens again: We have the furore, followed by the talks of tougher sentences etc, followed by apathy when something else comes along to titilate the sheeple. One can but hope :(

I have a new one here..

Clip = 2 7/8 inches
Spey = 2 1/8
Sheepsfoot = 2 1/8

Many thanks Pack Rat.

That is exactly the information I needed to know. Looks like the Stockman will fit the bill to a tee then :)

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Try to handle them before you buy. The 301 is a very nice little knife, but sometimes the springs don't walk and talk as well as they should.

My 301 has a mushy spring on the sheepsfoot blade. No wobble or anything and not a weak spring, it just doesn't snap as well as some of my older Bokers.

Thanks for the advice Psychopomp.

Unfortunately there are no local knife shops here for me to be able to try before I buy. I have to rely on mail order, but at least thanks to your advice I will know to check the springs whenever I get my hands on one.

Thanks again.

Hard to find them outside of mail order around here too. Local retailers are switching over to the Chinese versions.

I've noticed that around these parts too. It's a shame because those Chinese made versions sure are good looking.

Loupe, if you do decide to order one, call and have them look through a few and pick the one with the best snap to the springs. Most places won't mind doing it for you and it'll save you and them both the hassle of returns.

Thanks for the advice Psychopomp. Certainly makes sense for the retailer to make the extra little bit of effort to save problems later. I will certainly try to find a retailer who is prepared to go that extra mile.

Thanks again for your good advice.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to all who helped with this question, especially Pack Rat and Psychopomp. Thanks to your guidance I knew what to look for and what to be wary of. Thank you both.

I got my Stockman this morning and I am over the moon with it. Much nicer than I expected to be honest. It's an Idaho Buck with the "First Production Year" monogram. All the springs seem reassuringly firm and overall it is just a very pretty knife.

I have found my new EDC :)
