I'm familiar with the usual names...Mountainsmith, Gregory, Arcteryx, Lowe Alpine, Dana, etc., etc., etc.....

I have an opportunity to pick up a Deuter pack from friend at a great price - The model in question is the Futura 28. He just bought it...it still has the tags. The only reason my friend is getting rid of it is because he needs a larger pack.

Does anyone have any experience with this pack, or the Deuter brand in general???

Never heard of 'em.One of my best friends is procurement officer at NAVSPECWARCOM...erm..for the non military....Naval Special Warfare Command based in Coronado NAB (Naval Amphibious Base)California. aka: Navy SEALS,Special Boats,EOD,Combat Swimmers/divers,SAR, etc etc..I asked him and he never heard of em either.Suppose you can check google...He says alot of the guys are buying/getting issued some south african backpacks that are supposed to be the 'New' in deal that sets them apart from regular troops..I forgot the name but I think it was Rhino something....

I have a Deuter Race X Air II, best light cycling backpack around, IMO. My girlfriend uses a Futura 32 on our day and weekend treks and is very happy with it. Deuter makes very light, sturdy packs that are excellent for on-the-path comfort, at least those with the Aircomfort mesh panel (which I assume the Futura 28 has, like the 32). Built-in raincover is nice, too. Only one complaint/ compromise due to its design, IMO: To create the Aircomfort space, the mesh panel necessarily convexes the back panel of the pack itself. It makes it a little more difficult to access items stored in the bottom half of the pack, so be sure to pack anything you need to readily access on top. The breathable back space more than compensates for the compromise, IMO, but just FYI -- Glen

I've got a Dueter Transalpine that I have used as a day pack. I also travelled with it in SE Asia 3 times. It's still going strong after 5 years.

I am actually looking for a new daypack for school/college and just general hiking, and I am also looking at the deuter futura 28. From the resarch I have done, they are well-known (in Europe) German company who make pretty decent packs. THey have recently branched out more in the US, www.deuterusa.com is their website. From what I have heard, the Futura 28 is a really nice pack, hydration bladder compatible, separable compartmetns and even an included rain cover. The pack is mainly designed for hikers/climbers/ and bikers to some extent. It has a really nice Aircomfort back padding which keeps your back nice and cool on a hard summit day.

The only problem it seems to have is that its cost. Its about $80-90 retail from altrec.com. Also, it only comes in a blue/gray, no OD, etc.

Depending on what youre gonna use it for and how much hes selling it, go ahead and grab it. And if you don't want it, I'm willing to buy it because I'm planning on getting one soon anyways...

good luck
