I saw some kind of composite handled grey metal headed hatchet . The handle was about 14 inches long and wrapped/molded right around the head . The head almost seemed to be anodized though it might just be some kind of epoxy coating .The blade was about 3 inches wide . It was on sale for 15 bucks .This seemed a great price for a well made axe . I do take issue with handlews that don,t appear to be replaceable . It even looks like it might make a neat thrower except for the handle issue .What can anyone tell me about this hatchet and especially the handle .

I think they did an ad in a magazine once that showed one of the longer Fiskars axes leaned up against a 10-14 inch log, with a jeep parked on it about half way up the handle. That seems pretty sturdy to me. I think they're warranted against breakage as well. If you don't want to spend $50-100 for a handmade axe, those will keep you in lumber just fine.

I purchased the 28" Fiskars axe years ago. It's awesome. Says it's made in Finland.

Then last year I decided to pick up a small backpacking axe. Looked for a Fiskars in vain. Finally found that Gerber (now owned by Fiskars) was making a similar axe. The axe head still had the "Finland" stamped on it. A few months ago, I was in REI and helping a friend look through their gear. Noticed that the packaging and handle seemed different somehow. I took a closer look and noted that it no longer said "Finland" on the head. As I recall (I could be wrong), I looked on the back and it said Made in China. I'll have to go by again on Monday to see if my senility is getting worse, or if I'm actually remembering this correctly.

Anyway, I guess the point is that if you can find any of the orange-handled Fiskars, snag 'em.

mtnfalcon , don,t scare me like that . This happens all too often . I bought Blaupunk speakers that ended up being made in Korea . Even though I saw finland on mine I am going to check again .

Hi,

I'm brand knew here, having dropped in and registered to gain some info on Hudson Bay patterns and Fiskars axes, and I'm having a ball reading all of this info. But to the point - I have a Gerber Sport Axe (14-1/4" handle) that's about eleven years old and it plainly states "Fiskars 13060" at the top of the handle Doesn't say "Finland", however. It's a nice hatchet.

I was referring to Gerber axes produced within the last year. I've still to drop in the local REI again to check my memory.

Sorry Kevin, but I finally made it into REI today and confirmed. The longer Gerber camp axe had "Made in China" on the packaging, and the shorter Gerber backpacking axe had "Made in Taiwan".

The axe head steel is clearly not the same as my Fiskars axe head at home.

At least my Fiskars does say Finland on it . Even worse ? Gerber made a great little folding pruning saw that was outstanding . I wonder what will happen to that ?
