Looking for a Katana.
What brands are good what are just junk.
What are the best steels?
Where are the best places to purchase a Katana (good service and fixing any problems with purchase etc.)?

Hoo boy. You aren't going to get anything like a good answer in a brief post here in the forum... Or if you think you did you will get just the right sword for you.

I'm going to suggest using the search function here in this forum the question has been asked a time or three. I'm also going to suggest starting here: https://japaneseswordindex.com/

The author is no longer with us but the information is still good. We all have to start somewhere.

I'm hoping to put an end to this question (In a good way). I'm about to launch what will should be the highest quality full sized Katana on the market. 40in overall. Z Tuff Steel at 61RC with low temper and a fully enclosed handle with traditional fittings, but constructed with modern materials and engineering.

Here is the rough draft. I will have a final 3D model and the production details completed within the next few days and pre-order will be launching in a week or two.

I appreciate the effort. I suspect that this particular question is never going to leave us through. Are you saying that the edge is going to be 61 rc and the body is something else? 61 is quite high for a sword. The thing has to be able to flex without cracking or taking a set.

The whole sword will be 61RC. Ive made quite a few machetes out of Z Tuff at that hardness and it is very durable. The machetes can all bend to 90 degrees and back without any deformation and they do great with heavy impacts.

We are trying to keep the whole thing as light as possible, but we might beef up the blade just a bit to be safe.

Somewhere in the depths of Barry Dawson's words, since the '90s, is a story I'll paraphrase. He was showing flexibility for a customer, using the customer's blade. Dawson was using 440c. He clamped the blade in a vice and heaved on it flexing it greatly and scaring the shit out of the customer.

Heat treat can trump a steel's perceived abilities.

Traditionally, the heat treat for katana was not anything magic. Meant to cut, or pierce flesh, that's it.

Do visit both sites mentioned for today's market. My Hanwei Practical (gen 4) was $125 shipped in 2004 and I see the price now is $100 + more.

Fun stuff, spend wisely

Cheers

Thank you all for your information

I went to Kult of Athena and got the Balaur Arms – Shinto Oni Katana on sale $246.00 plus shipping and tax.
