Here are three of the old, Made in the USA Schrade 'big boys' as I call them. I take it you are asking about the new version of the one on the far right.

Hard to compare the old and the new knives, because of this: The original as I show you was made of FORGED STAINLESS STEEL. Can you believe that? A production knife made that way? Not many knives are made that way. No wonder it cost over $100 new (how much exactly, guys?). I have not handled a China-made version, so I simply cannot say how it will perform. For a while I had a 'user' grade BTO1 (the model number of this baby) and it was an excellent knife. Hard to get super sharp, but when it was... It stayed that way. I just got the knife out of the display case.. it is awesome to hold. But still, I cannot compare it to what I have never examined.

An FYI... the middle knife is the 'bomb tech' that several years ago I asked LT about. Before bidding on this one on eBay, I sought out his advice. Actually was made by Schrade with input from and for those in the exposive demo business. I understand schrade sent all they had in stock to the first Gulf War. I am somewhat embarassed to own this one.. It should be in the hands of a half-scared, half-cocky 19 year old, USArmy combat engineer buck sargeant squad leader. He could use the engraved 6 inch ruler on the blade to measure det cord, he could strip the wires for an electrical detonator to hook up claymore mines, he could cut things, file off a metal whatever and probe the ground for a landmine, or pry out something with the sharp, blunt tip. There are pockets on the sheath for blasting cap crimpers and whatever else. An electrical tape holder dangling from the bottom of the sheath.

I have not answered your question, and I am sorry. Seems I have just used this thread to ramble. Perhaps someone else will step in.

Ivan, welcome to our forum, and if you do get one of these new ones, feel free to offer us a review of it. I think they sell for about $40 on ebay. The last original Schrade BTO1 I saw on ebay was going for about $200, but that was new in the box.

textbook just to corret you on some thing Explosive Ordnance Disposal is way diff then a combat engineer i know becouse my brother was both first in the army corp of engineers then as a EOD in both the first gulf and now in the 2nd
gulf war his training was out by dc for like 6 months before they get to wear the pin and belive me that pin you see on the middle knife there in your pic is not some thing giving out lightly and the navy army marines and airforce who are E O D go to the same school just my 2 cent thanks

Welcome to the forum Nysuper. Believe me when I tells you so that Phil earned his "pin" the old fashioned way and knows of what he speaks. I don't think he takes it lightly either.

Nice Phil, is that the original sheath for the BT02 there on the left? I picked up one a while back that came with what looks like the sheath from a 147OT fillet knife.

Rick, Redshanks is correct, those are the original sheaths he's pointing out to you and as shown in my pic. But may I suggest you keep what you have if it fits? The DBL2 sheath has a couple of good things going for it.. the sharpening stone affixed to the back of the sheath, covered by a snap affixed strap. It's a tough sheath and I like all the attachment points. But sticking the knife into the sheath always bogs up and tangles the too-low safety strap. And it is a tight, tight fit of the knife into or out off the sheath.

Actually, I am glad this thread has come back. It has haunted me. I don't think I was very nice -- certainly not at all helpful -- to the person who started it. He asked a simple question and I got bent out of shape about China made Schrades.

So what if the China made steel is a bit lesser than the Schrade forged. The basic knife design it really what he was asking about. And I failed miserably there. So the guy dropped in for one question and then dropped out forever. I didn't leave him with a very good impression of our forum, did I?

(that's a rhetorical question-- no one need answer it)

Phil

Phil, I don't know why you feel the need to apologize, your original reply was informative, polite, and thorough. The poster who posed the question even thanked you for your information.

About the sheath though, I have an Imperial M-7S that I keep in a USM8A1 bayonet sheath because nearly half of the knife handle sticks above the top of the belt loop on the nylon camo sheath that came with the knife. This is a very poor design in my estimation because the exposed portion of the handle wants to catch on everything as it flops around.

The sheath strap and the sheath fit to the knife were designed to be tight to keep the rattling of the knife against the plastic to a minimum.

It is good to be quiet in the field in the military. It's not nearly as dangerous to make a little noise when hunting, though It could scare away a nice Buck (deer, not knife).
Come to think of it, that Schrade might scare away most of the Bucks I have seen, except maybe the Buck Master. :D

It was supposed to have the "tactical" look to it. I thought it looked great in the sheath. But when you pulled it out you'd laught at it the blade is too thin and too small. It looks better in the picture than it does in real life.

There is a lot of handle there for that blade but it looks like the BT01 is proportioned a little better. I havn't been able to snag one of those yet.
