Okay.

First of all, you can pretty much take all the stuff from the South American River site, and label it "crap". I know that sounds harsh, but this is Bladeforums.

Let's start here:

Knifecenter is a paid dealer member, so I can post a link. Have a look at what they offer, and if you see something you like, job's done. If not, please come back and let us know what you like, what you don't and we'll do our best to guide you.

An enormous (and I mean enormous) number of "damascus" knives are garbage, made in Pakistan and China.
Do not look for one on amazon, ebay, etsy or all those types of sites. Do not go by price-because you will get what you pay for,
Get one made by a recognized maker/brand and from a recognized knife dealer.
I know I'm sounding harsh but I'd like to see you gift your father a real, good, damascus knife.

Hrm....

I'm going to make an assumption, and based on that assumption, I'm going to waffle on about why the "damascus" that you find on Jeff Bezo's Online Emporium is crap.

There is a difference between "pattern-welded" steel and "Damascus" steel. The one is a process of layering two materials together. The other is the name of a location, and has become synonymous with not being able to tell for sure what exactly you're getting. Some "damascus" is 420J or 440C with stripes etched into it to look like the real thing. This is why you see such a wide variety of prices for Damascus steel.

If you want a beautiful genuine Damascus knife with engraving (handle), check out Chris Reeves Knives. What you've been looking at is crap.

For most of us here, CRK is about in the middle of what it's possible to spend on a knife. For somebody who's making their first post here, I didn't want to assume that they were ready to open their wallet to the tune of $500.

If you are looking for stainless Damascus, look for a Damasteel blade. They are a manufacturer, and their product is excellent. Boker Solingen made is good Damascus. Not sure about their Boker Plus stuff. If you are looking for a fixed blade forged carbon Damascus, get something from an American Bladesmith Society member.
You can also look for Thomas Damascus, there are many others I'm sure.
Just remember, If it's cheap, it's likely junk.

Welcome to Bladeforums Jamie321.

Lots of good advice has already been given. I just wanted to add, in reference to judging knives by there price, that there are vendors out there who will sell cheap Pakistani knives at ridiculously high prices (hundreds of dollars) and call them "custom" or "handmade". Sometimes they buy just the blades and put the handles on them themselves. Sometimes they include a very nice looking sheath as well. But whatever they call them, or whatever they look like, the knives are still crap. We've had some unfortunate individuals come here, post pictures of the "Damascus" knives they purchased for hundreds of dollars, only to find out what they bought was a cheap Pakistani knife that could have been purchased elsewhere for a fraction of the price.

And so, my advice is to not judge a knife by it's price, high or low. Don't assume that because a knife is expensive that it is a quality knife. That can be a good way to get burned. Instead, judge a knife buy who made it, and by who sells it. And when in doubt, ask here on Bladeforums, there is a lot of collective knowledge here, with a lot of people who are happy to help with no judgement or ridicule whatsoever.

Another piece of advice, don't judge a knife by how it looks. There is an abundance of knives out there that look good, but are in fact made out of crappy steel of unknown origin, and with either a lousy heat treat, or no heat treat. So like I said, when in doubt, ask here.

Good luck in your search.

Civivi make some inexpensive , fairly decent Damascus if your budget is limited .

For my pops, the wallet is always open, luckily all he wanted was a new Huntsman in classic red. I had the scales engraved for him.
