Need information on katanas

Hello everyone, this is my first post so kindly let me know if I have not given enough information for an accurate answer. Thanks!

I was recently shopping and had a closer look at a katana being sold. The curve near the tip of the blade was BLUNT and the rest of the blade was sharp. I asked the salesman why was it like this and he said it was DONE ON PURPOSE. What purpose, he did not clarify. I have tried doing my own research on this but there does not seem to be an answer anywhere. So I just wanted to know if this is for real or just bullshit. Thanks!
