Hello guys,

I've been looking to buy a "mini notebook" as it's called in the Netherlands, mini laptop is what you in the US use I guess.

A long time I thought that the Toshiba Libretto was the absolute best available but I discovered that Fujitsu also made/makes? one called B142 that is a little bigger then the Libretto but has an 8" TFT 800x600 resolution touch screen and more ports like USB/PCMCIA/Infrared and a 300 Mhz Celeron processor.

I'm looking for such an tiny one as we will carry it while at Scouting when having hikes/camps etc and we need it for our Garmin GPS'es so we can download tracks and upload maps.

I've never seen these Fujitsu mini laptops so I need input from somebody who worked with this specific model and or other mini laptops.

We don't need Ghz processor speeds, as the mapping software works perfectly from Windows 98 and a little wait is not a problem, however size is so a sub normal sized laptop has our preference.

If anybody knows where to get one please also let me know and I don't mean from Ebay as I find them very expensive over there as we can get a brand new full sized laptop with guarantee for $800 so a used no guarantee 300 Mhz Fujitsu for $500 is just to much.

If there are other good mini laptops around please let me know.

It was about teh size of a libretto but of more recent vintage. It even had a digicam built into the hinge (no, I'm not talking about the Clie PDA). I don't know the specs or price but it looked pretty cool.

Nordic Viking,

The Compaq Pocket PC that I have bought second hand for myself works perfectly, I use it for appointments, music, pictures, Excel sheets, my latest emails etc. and it works great. I have pocket books on it even installed Adobe Reader and have catalog's from Fallkniven, and survival manuals from the US army and one from the Swedisch army on it.
However, there is no way to get Garmin Software installed/running on it and even if you could the screen is just to small.

A small sub-notebook (mini laptop) with a processor of 266-300 Mhz and 4-6 Gb hard drive is perfect to hold everything we would need at Scouting and still be easy to carry.

I know about the Sony Vaio's they are verry nice but coust an arm and a leg.

We're Scouting and don't have unlimited funds and even an old laptop is pure luxury.

You can narrow your choices down to just a few so this will be easy.

Sony
Fujitsu
Apple

For the ultimate light weight and size you'll probably have to go with the Transmeta processor. Most people don't like them though since you give up speed and other features for longer battery life and less heat/noise.

I have a hard copy Piet, but where's you get it for a PDA? Is it for Pocket PC only (I have the Adobe reader for my palm). Is it possible you could email it to me?

Hi Jmx,

The Army Survival Evasion and Recovery manual is the June 1999 version and the PDF file is 3 Mb big I can try to send it but have to check if our home account can send emails that big, my hotmail account only allows up to 1 MB attachments.

Jmx, I found the site I have downloaded it from just go to:

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/policy/army/fm/21-76-1/fm21-76-1.htm

There are more to be downloaded from that site if I'm correct.

I have been using a Fujitsu B110 Lifebook for a long time, and it is a nice mini-notebook. It is a bit larger than a Libretto, but the advantage is that it has an almost-full size keyboard. This is very important for me since I can type quickly using both hands on the keyboard, but if somebody only types with two index fingers, then this means nothing.

I think that for GPS support you cand find something smaller, but the Fujitsu is good, and if you find one it will serve you well. Battery lasts long when new, but VERY expensive to replace once old.
