Reading Jackknife's posts has made me, and I suppose many others, start thinking about living more simply. I especially like his posts about traveling light. Recently I started getting rid of some of my knives. I still love knives, always will, but from here on out I am making an effort to only own knives that I actually use. Using knives gives me much more joy than occassionally fondling them and then putting them away.

I now find myself in a position to pick up a knife with the proceeds of my culling efforts. I am torn between the Scagel #8 and a CRK Sebenza. I love the look of the #8, but I am curious, has anyone here used one? It looks a bit large to carry. In this case though, beauty may just trump pure practicality.

i have both these knives, though have only recently received the Scagel and have not used it yet. i have a large classic sebbie with box elder burl inlay and decorated screws. for me, all my knives are users. i live on a large "homestead" style property, so have lots of opportunity for outdoor knife use, including hunting.
overall, the Scagel is ~1/4 inch longer open, the blade is thicker, as is the handle, making it the heavier knife, better suited to sheath belt carry than pocket.
the sebenza comes hollow ground with a fairly fine edge. the Scagel has more blade thickness near the edge and is convex ground at quite an obtuse angle.
and of course, steel used, blade geometry and locking mechanism all differ as does price.
i'm sure both knives will work well for me and offer a different experience. ( i like sharpening 1095). the sebenza carries well with the pocket clip (and i am small), the Scagel needs belt carry.
still you need to hear from someone who has used the Scagel for awhile at least. roland
