i have a 5th gen 80gb video, w/ windows.

a bunch of songs i purchased now cant be played or synced. there is an exclamation point icon next to all the songs i cant play. when i double click on them, i get a "cant be found" type message.

what gives?

Sounds like your itunes can't find the files in the library. The most likely cause is the files got moved around from one folder to another on your computer.

Try right clicking on one of the files and go to the get info option. It should tell you the location of the file. You may have to re-import it into the library.

It is also possible that the file was somehow deleted. If this is the case, and you don't have a backup anywhere, you may have to re-purchase the files. :(

Backing up files is really important with itunes. Missing or misplaced files happen fairly often. Good luck, and hopefully you can find the missing file.

i can find them using that method, but at the bottom it says unavailable.

they might be lost, but why do they still show up in the library?

Just because the file shows in your library doesn't mean it's still on your computer. Think of your itunes library sort of like an old card catalogue file at the public library. Just because the card catalogue says that War And Peace is on the shelf doesn't mean it is so. You'd think that the software would be smarter than that after all these years. :o

When you go to the Get Info and look under the Summary Tab at the bottom is a link labeled WHERE. It should list the file's location on your computer; something like: C:\Users\Documents\MyMusic etc.

thx rick.

ill mess with it some more and see if i can find the files.

what is also odd, is a lot of the missing stuff has been played not that long ago. and i havent intentionally deleted anything, and normally charge my ipod with a wall or car charger.

Download a program called SharePod. This allows you to remove the files on your iPod and save them to your HD in the SharePod folder. You can then wipe the iPod and add all of the files back through iTunes or continue to use SharePod as the default file handler. Be sure to read the instructions carefully to avoid killing your iPod and losing everything. Do not have SharePod and iTunes open at the same time. Plug in iPod and open iTunes and then close iTunes without disconnecting the iPod first. You can then open SharePod.

This program worked well when my HD took a crap a few months back. I lost everything including my music in my iTunes folder. SharePod was able to remove the files from my iPod and restore my iTunes library. I just opened iTunes and added the SharePod folder to the iTunes library.

Take note, SharePod will not move games or movies from your iPod.

Screw itunes. Never, ever, buy DRM'd music, and you won't have these problems. Give Apple the finger and install Rock Box.

Just MNSHO, of course ;)

Well that really won't help him now will it? Considering he already has downloaded from itunes it's a bit late for your NSHO.

If it didn't have the stoopid copy protection he'd have backups.

FairPlay DRMed files can be backed up just the same as those without... iTunes even has a backup function built in and reminds you to backup after purchases.

No excuse not to have backups really.
