I need a recommendation for a knife as a retirement present. Budget target is right around $160 U.S. plus or minus a bit. What is the nicest one I can get for $180 or less?

It would probably help us all if you clarified what you were looking for a little more. Are you looking for a fixed blade, or a folder? Also, since it's a retirement gift are you looking for something that's more of a gentleman's knife, with a little more glitz for lack of a better word, or something with more basic looks?

Check out www.leglerknives.com. I don't own one, but a friend recommended them to me and swears by them. Have a hard look at the folders, and the ones in Knife Gallery 2-4. Some of them have great fittings and handle materials and are right in your price range. The folders look like they are just a little outside it.

For folders Benchmade makes a lot of nice ones, and so does William Henry, though I think they're a little more pricey. Klotzli knives also makes a few gent's folders worth looking at.

Even though they are less then $180 I think the benchmade 710, Spyderco Chinook and benchmade mini-skirmish are all great knives.

Yeah that. For $180 you could get one of the black benchkote limited edition models if that floats your boat.

bit more information... Not restricted to fixed or folding. Looking for a high class, working knife. The person was a professional butcher in a previous position so looking for a real knife, that is designed for use vs. one for looks. I am hoping to get a nice looking knife in that range. I had considered a Gene Ingram type fixed blade or William Henry folder.

No brainer, Gene Ingram with some of that lovely Burl or linnen Micarta & Mosaic pins.

bought my first Benchmade last week. A mini skirmish...very impressed with the quality. Smooth, tight lockup, top grade materials. I dont think you can go wrong and for that money you can get one of the fancy ones.

Wow, those knives are beautiful, and very affordable. I thought my next major knife purchase was going to be a BM Skirmish, but now I may have to hold off on my first BM purchase.

Thank you for posting that link!

If you want an impressively stunning knife, get him the SOG Trident bowie. At least the older ones I have are the best looking knives anywhere near that price range bar none.

Either of those would be very suitable for a formal gift, and suitable for using. You should also check out Bob Dozier knives.

Lagarto, Thanks for the link to Legler knives; I've never heard of them. I've added one of those to my shopping list.

I'm not sure what kind of time frame you're looking at but you can get a killer custom made knife like this one for $155 bucks from David Winston knives. http://winstonknives.blademakers.com/
