I know this is the wrong forum to ask this question but I'm going to ask the moderators to let me slide this one time for two reasons. 1) I'm not getting much response in what should be the right forum (Practical Tactical) and 2) the Makers' forums are where I spend most of my time (I'm not a knifemaker myself, just a "wannabe someday") and I've developed a healthy respect for the opinions of the regulars here. That said, here is what I asked over in PT:

A buddy is deploying to the big sand box next month and I was thinking I'd like to give him a decent knife to take with him. But I need some recommendations about what would be most useful, hopefully from some who have been there (thank you!). My budget is around $200, so handmades are out, Busse is out. I'm thinking maybe something from TOPS or Emerson. Folder or fixed? Serrated or plain edge? How big is too big? Whatever other info you think is important. Thanks.

i say fixed blade. if he's in the sand box he'll have enough gear on him where he won't notice a fixed blade and enough gear on him where it might be hard to shuffle around for a folder clipped on or in his pocket

alright first of all the price range is fine for some fixed blade customs. don't worry about that. you just won't get anything fancy
but it sounds to me like all you need is a heavy duty "work" knife anyway. no frills.
i bet there are a few guys here on the forums who can wack out a nice $200 knife that can do the job

the only problem is the time to get a custom before next month
you might wanna check the for sale forums i saw a few fixed blade tacticals there

if not you may wanna post a new thread saying you're looking for a custom tactical

I'm with Mikey on this one. There are TONS of knives available on here that will fit your description and budget, and this way the guy is getting a true 'one of a kind' knife!

yeah what he said!!!!:p

but make sure you step on it because time is short.
might be able to find a tactical maker who can fit within the time constraints
maybe someone who has their own HT oven if you wan't it done out of stainless.

good luck

p.s. matt check your PM's Man

you need nothing more then a strong 6 inch blade fixed blade
if your using a knife to fight with just call the air in on your self is how this should be loooked at
after i spent 4 years in the marines and have a knife in the box right now
im gettign about where i and the user want the knife
the sad thing is that my friend that i made the first (OB) knife for was told he couldnt take it with him as the blade was over 3 inch ( some unit rule)

Yeah def fixed blade. folders are nice but he is much more likley to use it as a sharpend prybar and opening MRE'S than anything else. i took over cold steel SRK and loved it tough sharp and dosnt break the bank. and no matter what you see in the movies it dosnt have to bee a sword haha. a small to mid sized fixed blade that he can attach to his body armor will find much more use than a huge Kurki that he leaves in the barrecks. tell him good luck and for gods sake to listen to his medic :>
