I would like to have a custom knife made and am looking for a recommendation on a maker.

Here's what I want:

Forged, carbon steel blade
Hunting / utility blade about 4 inches long
Single, brass guard
Quality leather sheath

I am looking to spend about $250.

Thanks.

BladeForums member Bill Buxton comes to mind. You check out his knives in the Gallery forum or in the for sale forums in the maker fixed blade area.

I am not sure if Terry Primos still fits into your price guidelines, but if he does I would highly recommend you check him out.

Search under the names names B . Buxton and primos.

Nick Wheeler might be able to get you something for that price. His work is impeccable.

Give Craig Camerer a call. He only lives about 50 miles away from you, and will certainly make you something you like for that price.

I recomend David Winston, Also a BFC member. Some of his work can be seen in the exchange. :)

Another suggestion is Dave Larsen for a forged blade. I've seen his work, really great. And Dave is more than reasonable with his prices. Dave has fantastic sheaths to compliment his work, and is a great guy, too. Dave's e-mail is ddavelarsen@mchi.com .

I'll second David Winston, you'll get everything you want for half the cost without ANY decrease in quality.

Thanks for the recommendation guys.

Hornet, that's right up my alley, except I'm not a big fan of brass. I'd really recommend 416 stainless as one of the best guard materials, but if you were really set on brass I still have some left over.

Don't want to take business away from my friends here, but I did want to let you know I'd be happy to make a knife for you :)

And to think, I didn't recommend Nick.

Sorry Nick, I just didn't think about you being in this price range. I don't know why.

Nick,

Sounds to me like the "Blademan Special" might be right up his alley ;) Now if you could just get a pic of it

Seriously though, Nick is a hoot to work with. Doesn't make a bad knife either. I can also heartily recommend Terry Primos and Dan Farr. A couple of real nice gents there as well.

Any of the names mentioned are excellent, but let me throw another one in--Bruce Evans. He does awesome work. Matt Lamey also fits the bill.

Not adding anything new here other than to chime in with additional kudos for my two favorites: Terry Primos and Craig Camerer. I have some from both, and they are both talented and nice people to work with. I have one Primos and another on order and two Camerers with two more in the works. The knives I have from both of them are forged 1084 that performs great.
Good luck on your quest, and let us see your choice when the time comes.

Lots of good suggestions so far. I've seen or handled work from most of the makers listed, and they are very good.
Another maker I would suggest would be Ray Kirk. Ray makes some amazing knives for excellent prices. You know his knives will perform and work hard, as he does extremely well in the ABS cutting competitions with his forged wares. He goes by Raker on the forum. Also, Ray is a great individual to talk to and get to know.
