Hi all, I need some micarta blocks in either 1.75"x2"x8" or 2"x2"x8" size. I need three blocks for some fixtures I'm building...does anyone know of a source for these sizes. It doesn't have to be pretty stuff, it's just for some fixtures...

Darren I built some 2" blocks up from 1" pieces. Bolted and epoxied them together. I had to tap the holes for the bolts though, sheet metal screws just broke off.

Thanks Mike, they did indeed have it. In case anyone else is ever looking for some this size, as a reference point, they had it for $16.85 per block in the 2"x2"x8" size.

Dave, that's a great idea! ...and if I hadn't already ordered them, I'd certainly use your suggestion...if I have to make any more of these, I definitely will. Thanks!

:)

Actually, I kinda wish I'd thought to ask like you did Darren. Would've saved me some money and time. :D Guess I'll have to go see what they have in terms of base and color.

What are you making by the way? Micarta is wonderful stuff to make other stuff out of.

I'm making some jigs for hollow grinding...I know, I know, I know, before anyone starts in on me about using a jig for hollow grinding... :D I can hollow grind freehand fine...I've got a small production thing I am working on on the side to see if I can get it off of the ground....the jig would ensure repeatability and uniformity and increase speed... I wouldn't advocate using a jig for custom work, but for production and semi-production stuff, I say go for it! :)

Well that sounds interesting. Please be sure I'm on your mailing list, if that's applicable. I'm with you on production-type issues. ;)

I'll add you to the mailing list...though I won't be sending any emails out until the ball is rolling. This is something I was hoping to get off of the ground last year, but my wife's health issues took precedent, and I put this venture aside for a while. Hopefully sometime in the later part of this year I'll have this project off and running. Wish me luck! :)

Thanks and Good Luck! :D And I hope your wife is doing well.

Thanks Dave, she's made a complete and total recovery...to see her today you wouldn't even know how touch-and-go it was for a while last year...we got lucky.
