Hello,

I'm pretty new to the wonderful knife world. It's not easy to find many good knives in here (New Zealand). The price in normal knife shop is ridiculous. Maybe I just didn't find the right place. Any information about knife in NZ is welcome.

Currently, I'm trying to understand how the lock system work on a folder. There are so many techniques, front, back, frame, linear, etc. But I can't understand them without touching them by my own hand. Does anyone know a good website/webpage about them? Picture in detail is definitely a plus.

Oh, BTW, I just ordered two spydie (FRN Delica 4 PE and SS Dragonfly SE) from lighthound with some flashlight parts. I can't wait to see them in my mailbox. And a Kershaw Blur is on my list. I have to say this is too addictive. :D

Cheers for my first post.

Locks are usually pretty simple, the basic ones you run into are the axis lock, liner/frame lock, and back lock, there are others but they aren't as common.

The axis lock consists of a specially designed cut on the pivot end of the blade which allows it to take advantage of a spring loaded bar, if you look at the latest 710 appreciation thread you can see how it works. The backlock is a spring loaded seesaw that has a hook on one end where it grabs a cutt out in the butt of the blade and holds it tight. The frame/liner lock is a springy lever that is attached to the handle and has a spring towards the inside of the frame, when opened the lever moves in and puts force against the lower back part of the blade. It's is definitely easier just to see the knife yourself, but I hope I helped.

Welcome to Bladeforums, just leave your wallet at the door, it will soon be empty anyway.
IIRC there were some nice exploded diagrams of locking systems on the Benchmade site.

Welcome to Bladeforums! You're not the only one here from New Zealand, maybe someone else can chime in and help with knife stores near you.

Locks. Here's an excellent place to start, Benchmade's page on Locking Mechanisms, including the framelock, which they call Monolock:

Here's Chris Reeve's pages on the Sebenza's integral lock, the first framelock:
