For my birthday I received a new Pflueger Trion model 56

I'd like to take it hiking and camping this summer.

What I am looking for is a Break-down/Telescoping backpackable rod to match it up to.

Any recommendations?

I understand the reel is a tad heavy...but it is the newest toy.

Hey, it's your call, but the collapsible rods I've seen just don't have the same backbone as one (or even two) piece rods. I think of backpacking rods as more about the weight than about the fishing. Maybe someone here can steer you to a quality backpack rod though.

For a good casting rod, I like Falcon and All-Star. Can't go wrong with a St. Croix either. Some of the Bass Pro rods are pretty nice too.

Yeah, I checked the specs on that reel to make sure, and I stand by my original recommendation.

195 yards / 12 Lb., 180 yards / 14 Lb., 100 yards / 20 Lb.
Medium Freshwater / Light Saltwater

I'd think you'd have a hard time finding a collapsible rod that would match up nicely with that reel.

Since your reel is rated for higher test line, 12 to 20 lb., look for a rod that is in the same class. You'll likely find that it is a medium/heavy action rod. I like longer 7' rods, though they are a bigger pain to transport in a car and harder to cast in any cover.

I linked this in an earlier reel post. I got it for fishing off the Harley and back packing. There is a bit of a learning curve for casting but it works very well once you get the feel of it.

They offer a few configurations for reel types including fly.

This is the basic one I have along with the 4 various weight poles.

A secret to using a baitcaster reel is matching it with the correct rod and line.
They can be hard to cast accurately and frustrating with the wrong rod.

5 1/2' pistol grip M-MH rod.
Don't throw anything under a quarter ounce on it.
You'll have fun.

That's a heavy reel for chuckin' plugs all day. It would work very well on a long trolling rod!

Ive got a St. Croix 4 piece that packs down pretty small. I looked at a lot of telescopic and pack rods, and this was definitely the best. Made a crush proof container for it with some PVC piping so I can just jam it in the back pack and not worry about it.

The St. Croix Premier Traveller 4-piece is an excellent breakdown rod. Better than any 2-piece I've had. But it's best suited to a lighter weight reel. I modified a tent pole drawstring bag to carry mine. The hardshell case it came with was too bulky.
