I'm not educated at all when it comes to knives, but a buddy told me the other day that I need to retire my old hunting knife. He recommended I go for a custom knife and pointed me to your forum. I'm looking for a knife with stag handle and horizontal sheath. Any help would be appreciated.

Id check out the makers sub forum and browse around in the for sale forum. Once you find a maker you like, you could likely get them to custom build a knife:)

No matter what knife you choose steel choice should be at the top of your list, that said 52100 at RC62 will keep up with even the Best super steels.

So many awesome knives you will see on BF's.

There are some awesome custom hunting knives here, check out the custom knives forum, general knive discussions and even the wilderness and survival subforums too to get some good ideas on what you want. There are some great reviews on knives there too.

Is that why you're angry, Dave? :)

I certainly don't want to knock any of the fine custom knife makers on this forum, but do YOU want a custom knife or are you just asking because your buddy suggested it?

Customs tend to be significantly more expensive than production knives. If you're OK with that then more power to you, but there are a ton of good production knives to choose from as well (though the combination of stag handle and horizontal sheath isn't a common one).

Did he say why he thought you should retire the old one? Because if it works and you like it, then as long as its in good shape i would see no reason to retire it. Some people are knife snobs and think that anything not custom or supersteel or priced over x amount of dollars can't be a good knife. But some of the best using knives you can find are opinels (folding) or moras (fixed) which cost less then fifteen bucks. Not that there is any problem with expensive custom supersteel knives, but you must examine what you plan on using the knife for, versus what you can afford, and then trying to find the best knife for that use that still fits in your budget.

Maybe a little information would allow folks here to narrow it down for you.

Is the knife you are replacing a good size for you, anything you like or don't about it in particular?

Other than stag, what do you want in a new knife? How long, how heavy, is moisture or rust a problem, what is it going to be used for hunting?

What is your budget?

What is the knife you currently have? You can also look at Bark River Knifes for some great knives with a wide variety of handle materials, to include stag.

I'd go to makers section and take my time. I wouldn't pull the trigger till I found my grail knife
