Need new knife

I currently carry a Gerber para for EDC. I know it is a pos and I want to upgrade. I am torn between several models of that Kershaw makes. If the blade steel in this thing was worth a crap I would keep it but it doesnt want to stay sharp and has a lot of play side to side as well. I like the size and shape as it fits my pocket and hand well. I like the looks of the salvo, blur, and OD1 but unfortunately have nowhere to look at these knives where I live. I use my knife for everything nothing terribly harsh but have occasionally had to cut cans open or pry/dig with it. It seems the Blur had the better blade for harder use just seems a bit large for pocket carry. Not real sure about the flipper thing I would prefer a thumbstud I think as I have never handled a flipper style knife. I would appriciate it if some of you guys that have handled all three of these could chime in with pros and cons of these 3 models. Thanks

All three are great knives but for what you described I would go with either the Salvo or the Blur. The Salvo, to me, is a sturdier knife, but is a bit hard to open due to it smallish thumb stud. The Blur is a very comfortable knife and with the Speedsafe assist and the best thumb stud ever it is very easy to open. I've not been overly inspired by the lock on my Blurs, but they have been good enough. The blade shape of the two are both good and equally strong, I think it would come down to preference. The Salvo will take up a bit less pocket space.

What about the shallot? Again not crazy about the flipper but nice looking knife. Much prefer the full frame lock on the shallot and salvo to the liner lock of the blur it seems a little thin to me.

Kershaw need to make the Blur II with a frame lock. That would just about perfect the knife.

The Shallot is one of my top favorites of the Kershaw line. I own a composite version and a 110 version and once you get used to flippers it's hard to go back to anything else. If I were you I'd get a Black Shallot they have been reported to being less slick. They carry well, and go in and out of the pocket nicely and even in hand the ergos are good enough to make it secure, but there are a few transitional points from pocket to being full grip that make you realize just how slick the scales can be.

just found the shallot online withthe combo steel 14czn/zdp189 is this a good combo?

That's a very good combo, but good luck finding one. :)

For sure check out what Dave might have. If he has any NRG 2 do yourself a favor and pick one of those up too.

I too have been looking for a new EDC. I considered the blur, skyline and shallot. The blur just seemed like it would be to rough with the tac grips, and I wanted an assist open, so that ruled out the skyline. So I just ordered a shallot blem from Dave. I can't wait to get it. I may still get a skyline in the future.

The tac grip is made of a soft, textured, rubber. They give a nice grip without being abrasive.

another good one to EDC if you don't mind a bit of thickness is the Needs Work. Kershawguy has blems for $20. Hell of a slicer.

Flashpoint, maybe "to rough" wasn't the best choice of words on my part. I think I was most worried about it having to much grip limiting easy deployment.

You'd be surprised. Kershaw made a place for the clip to rest that is absent of tac grip so the knife slides right out without gripping or ripping your pocket. Like I said, the Blur would be a perfect edc if it had a frame lock.

+1 to a Blur with Frame lock

Although a well designed liner lock (i.e. ZT line) works well too
Has there been a problem with the Blur's liner lock?

I went from carrying a gerber para also to my first kershaw.. the oso sweet. I still carry the oso sweet primarily, but have since added a needs work, speed bump, and a skyline to my line up. Honestly you cant go wrong with any of them. The needs work blem from kershawguy for $20 shipped is an absolute steal though.

He has JYD composite blade but it doesnt say what the other steel is on the edge. does anyone know?
Looks a little big but thought it would make a nice truck knife. I will probably get the Shallot from him as well for EDC.

The skyline is not a bad looking knife I do like the frame lock of the Shallot so I think I will get it for the EDC now looking for an little larger "truck" knife now.
