My old no-name stone is dead. The cat just had to find out what I was doing, so now the stone is in a dozen pieces on the concrete. What do you all recommend I get? I need something with medium and fine grit.

It'd help if we knew what type of stone you were using. I realize you don't have a brand name, but there are a lot of possibilities as to what to look for, depending on if you're looking for something similar.

Even the 'medium' and 'fine' grit definition will depend on the type of stone. A 'fine' diamond hone is much more coarse than a 'fine' ceramic, and neither of those is likely similar to a 'fine' grit SiC, waterstone, or India stone. Lots of variation in grit standards & performance, even between different brands, using similar abrasive.

Might even be helpful to post a pic of your broken stone. I'm betting someone here will recognize, at least generally, what you've got, and recommend a similar replacement (if that's what you're looking for).

If you are happy with the results you got with the old stone you might want to stay with it. You can check online and try to compare what you had with pics of manufactures stones. Norton has been making combo stones for quite some time and could be theirs you had. Check their pics of stones. Good luck.

There's a Japanese version of the 'dollar' store (Daiso) here in the SF Bay area. Most stuff costs $1.50 there. I picked up a 180/320 aluminum oxide combo stone for cheap. Its a 6" x 2" x 3/4", Seems to work just fine. I'll use it for when I travel to those places like my mother in laws where the sharpest knives are the 10+ year old serrated knives.

For my work house stone I use a Norton India combo stone, 8 inch, which I've had for 30+ years.

Go to Sierra Trading Post (online). They have Dan's Arkansas stones for sale at 50% (or more) off. They are seconds, but the odds are you won't be able to tell why/how. I just picked up a 10" surgical (translucent) for less than $50. That's a huge extra fine stone for the cost of a man-made oxide. The stone will outlast me.

I notice that www.knifecenter.com has Dan's black arkansas stones. They have a 2x8 for like 55 bucks, on dans web site that stone is in the 80 dollar plus range!
Are they seconds as well? Are they fake? I don't see how this possible unless they simply bought them long ago, and now they cost more but knifecenter has the old price. I really want one, and would love to save the 20 plus dollars going through knifecenter!
