I am new to this forum and decided to come here for suggestions. I know there is a weatlh of information and wisdom here as my husband is on this site as often as he can be.

Our 2nd wedding anniverary is coming up this summer and I wanted to plan something for us to do. I have done some preliminary research and would love to do some backpacking/camping in the North Cascades National Park. After looking at the list of 140 so designated backcountry campsites I was beginning to feel overwhelmed. Does anyone have any suggestions for wilderness camping in the North Cascades National Park-WA? Suggestions for outside the park are welcomed as well.

Thanks!

Its not for Washington, but the Three Sisters Wilderness area in the central Cascades of Oregon is an outstanding place to hike. Some hike, bike, or go in on horse

I always liked the area around marblemount. There is a road out of town that heads up into the mountains, great hiking with many campsites (at least 7-8 years ago).

Camping on Mt. Rainier itself is pretty cool - my son and I used to do it when we lived in WA (we were there for 22 years). We'd typically be gone for a couple days at a time. Eagle's Roost is a nice barebones campground on Mt. Rainier, and I think there are some camping spots over by the Carbon Glacier, which is worth hiking just for the experience.

My favorite place when I was a kid was up in the Olympic National Forest.

Check it out!

bp441 a ditto to mike g on the olympic jungle. good idea to pack a pistol in some of these rempte areas since 2 legged skunks pop up every now & then. sisters is agreat place also . i lived in portland 81 thru 83 & spent much time in all those areas. what i liked best was the fact every stream & creek had lots of rainbows. good luck on your trip.also welcome to the forum.

It's maybe a little out of your way but sure worth a visit and that's Friday Harbor out on the San Juan Peninsula (about an hour ferry ride west of Anacortes). Do a Google of the area. I live in Washington and it's a yearly retreat to go there and unwind. I love their motto "We're a quiet little drinking town with a fishing habit and we don't care how they do it on the main land.....the weather is here ~ wish you were beautiful...burp."

The entire area is filled with the most pleasant people and a unique artisian persona....and seeing the Orca whales is fun too!

Okay, since nobody's actually answered your question...

Back a few years I used to hike up there with my GF. She prefered to stay by Lake Diablo and day hike. There's lot's of good places to just be alone on the river and the side tribs. We'd hike, swim, catch some rays, and never see anybody. There's some hot springs out there too, she had a book, they can get crowded though.

Lake Chelan is more for boaters and fishermen. Dolly Varden is a good campground (or used to be), but the road sucks and traffic is bad.

Take a camera.

check out www.wta.org

Thorton Lakes Trail
Fourth of July Pass
Thunder Creek Trail
Schreibers Meadows

Look into hiking up Sauk Mountian also. very popular and beautiful.

Colonial Creek Campground is nice place to base out of.
You can jump onto the Pacific Crest from Hwy 20 also

This is rugged country, but if you have much backpacking experience you should be fine.
The weather in the area can be quite serious, but worth it. Rain is a reality year round.
