Need older Buck 501 blade

I have a early 501 that I got in a small lot of knives that I bought. Someone destroyed the blade with a grinder. The B on the tang is the script version from early 80's I think. Anyone have a comparable blade? I have never replaced a blade so would be glad to hire a competent knife mechanic to install. Also is this a needle in a haystack venture or do you guys think one could be found somewhere ? I understand Buck can install a new blade but then I get 420HC instead of 440c which is tougher and better edge retention. I have an older 110 and it seems to sharpen well nad hold edge better than my newer Buck.

If much beyond 1980, it's likely the original blade wasn't 440C anyway. Buck stopped using 440C in very early '80s (like '81) and then used 425M steel until maybe ~ 1992 or so, after which they transitioned to 420HC. In terms of it's makeup, 425M is much more similar to the 420HC they use today. The 425M steel from Buck isn't bad at all - I have a 'four dot' 112 in 425M, the 'four dot' date stamp on which was used from '81 - '86. And comparing 425M with Buck's current 420HC, the current blades are likely at least as good in terms of edge retention, and with improved thinner grinds as well.

All the above is to say, I'd not worry too much about letting Buck replace the blade with their current 420HC, if they're willing to do it. I'd think it'll be much harder to find someone willing to part with one of the older blades in 440C, IF one can be found at all and in good condition for that knife.

I think you are probably looking for a needle in a haystack. Probably your best chance to find one is to look for a knife with a good blade and abused or broken handle. I think those are likely more rare than knives with abused or broken blades. If you do find one, it likely that Buck would do the swap if you send both knives to them. I would be best to contact them first to verify that, before sending the knives in. Good luck with your search.

Or send them the knife with $10, and they will put a modern blade into it. At least you would have a usable knife that way.

The model 501 was first shipped to dealers in Feb. 1975. Thus, 440c steel was used for 7 years prior to the switch to 425m steel in 1982. It should not be difficult to find a 501 with a good blade. Gees just purchase the knife and keep it as is. Good hunting. DM
