hi!
i want to buy a new balisong and i have two knife which are my favourit ones! the italina sty. balisong and the pacific style balisong. i think the pacific is looking great, very stylish and smooth! but the italian has more flair to it. does anyone have got one of these? did you tried them out? how do they behave, which one would you suggest? thx for your experinces :]

I don't know what to tell you. I wasn't too impressed with the Pacific Style knives. It flips fairly well but doesn't function as a knife that well. I;ve worked on and off sharpening for months now and can't seem to get it to work.

If those are the only two knives you would consider now.., I suppose I'd get the "Charming-Chinese-Pacific-Lazer-Bat-Blade" guy Strahler.

If you're just collecting some knives and Josh will give you one of the Italians at a really good price, they are OK looking, but they don't handle well. He did have some really little Italians with gorgeous Thuya wood inserts and I got a jeweler to put one on a chain, but neither knife is going to make you very happy for "use", as Mykl mentioned.

The Pacific Style guy is basically a copy of some of the older Pacific Cutlery Models we really like on here, but of course it's not the "same" knife.., and the latch is absolutely awful.

For a knife to beat up and practice new stuff with they are great though.., so get that one if you are thinking of it as a tool for improvement of your techniques. If you want to use it heavily..save about $100 more bucks and get a BM...-you'll thank us later ;)

I cant stress it enough, save and get a Benchmade.

There are now 4 different choices to pic from, and 3 of those have handle options in itself. I'm sure you can find one to fit your style.

Trust me man, its a whole different world.

i think i´m gonna get a benchmade now... please, dont laugh but at the moment i only got a little borken knife from (i dont dare to say it) "rostfrei" :o i bought it in a military shop in my town when my first balisong (that one was even more bad than the rostfrei) broke apart at the middle (the knobs were rubbed through, i think i was too enthusiastic with it).
after doing some winmills and stuff with my new rostfrei it fall down and the latch broke hmm... really nice quality... so, i´m not a collector. i just want a good quality balisong that even looks nice . do you have a hint for me which benchmade is lets say a middleclass one (price and quality)? because i dont want to spend 200$ or something... lets say.. about 80-120$?? or less? for the beginning, jou know ;)

ohh, i wish u all a great christmas time and perhaps a new balisong under your tree?!? :D

Strahler,
Don't be embarassed about the rostfrei, we all started somewhere, and a whole lot of us started with china cheapies. ;) The new Ti-40 series (42,43,47) are all great - get whichever profile you like more. Also, the new 31 looks to be a wonderful little knife. I plan on getting one for daily carry, as the smaller size would look (I hope!) less menacing.

Definitely go with the BM's I have two from the 40 series (a 42as and a 43) and love them both. I too a getting a 31 for an EDC though for the basic same reason as Peacefrog and I think 4" is a little big for my every day uses. Plus I have little hands so 3 inchers fit great.

Mkyl,
Only way I've gotten any kind of edge on the Pacific style is with a file. I only keep that one for fun. They do flip well. Strahler, if you want one to use, get the BM. Most of the rest of the imports are not much more than toys.

Almost agree with you 100% there Navajo. The old Valor's and Taylor-Seto were pretty well made and held a decent edge. The modern rendition of the Jaguar lacks only a set of decent non-self-destructing handles, as their blades are very usable. Otherwise I wouldn't have sent it to be re-handled by Eric (Mer).

i'm surprised that no one has mentioned the jaguar...
the jaguar classic seen on knifezilla was my second knife, no third, after an italian (which i still have), and a ccc. it's not that expensive, and not the worst imaginable quality (except for the pins, but those can be replaced), so it's a pretty good beginner's knife. why don't you try it out, and you can advance into a benchmade or something later. :)

Tony,
Back in the early 80's, I was selling balis as fast as I could get them. Some of them were excellent knives. One Valor, big slabs of brass with a fancy roll stamp in particular, I loved the way that one sounded as it was fliped. Wish I still had some. Another Valor came with a spear point blade and steel handles. That was a good one also. Never had a Frost but I did look at one in a shop in Colorado Springs. That one seemed to be pretty high quality. Parker, I think, made a small one with delrin inserts and that one was decent. Another Valor was too light to flip but, it had a two and one half inch deep belly blade with a gut hook on the spine. It was an excellent skinner. I still have a Taylor-Seto. Brass with rose wood. Talked to Mer about some new handles. Just might do it.

Ahhh, the good old days. Thanks Ted Kennedy
