Need opinion on knife before I bid.

Wow, a "whopping" 9 inches with a 4 inch blade. You could use that to dig for worms. What's with the funky plastic thing bolted to the back of the blade???

Who knows? This is the problem with auctions, normally I don't go there but this seemed like a cheap(ish) sturdy knife that I could abuse if necessary instead of my nice expensive ones.

SMWK was selling those for $15 a few years back. Kind of a clunky knife with no pocket clip and a thin liner lock.

I don't see what the problem is, other than price.
It seems like a fairly stable design, and that black think appears to be nothing other than a thumb-rest.

Looks like a POS to me.
1. I don't like that plastic on the blade,
2. the handle is too big for the overall knife size and it looks clunky.
3. Something tells me (I could be wrong) that this knife will have considerable blade play.
4. for $50 bucks you could get an endura.

When looking at the price of the knife don't forget that it's in Oz dollars. For me to buy a $US50 knife would cost me, including shipping, around $AUS96

That plastic thing on the blade is the thumbstud. The blade shape and full serrations don't look like a utility knife to me, but if you do a lot of poking and rope-cutting, it's not bad. It was never a winner of a knife, at least, I never heard of this model, but the handle looks comfortable and a 4" blade and 5" handle is entirely reasonable -- for a working knife you want a lot of grip. AUS6 should be pretty rust-resistent.

It's not a POS but I think it's a bit much to pay for a beater (? $25-30 American)

Read the details carefully, it sounds like a lot of(not 100%, of course) what you're paying for is, in part, the carrying system. Not too many beaters have that.

And it looks like there are rubbery inserts in the handle.
I'd bet that they stopped producing because of manufacturing costs. Putting all of those little plastic pieces together isn't cheap.

Just buy a good user off the forum.Shipping should cost any more than 10.00.

That's probably not a bad plan but I wonder how many forum sellers would be interested in the hassle of international shipping and payment and so on. Certainly worth a try though.

It's a good knife I had the same knife with the clip point blade. I bought about 8 or 9 years ago I think I paid $36 or $37 U.S. for it. I looked up the exchange rate and $52 AU.is about $36 US. I remember back in 98 or so these selling for less than $20 US. just after they were discontinued.

Like I said it's a good knife it's well made. The handle is thick and the rubber keeps it from slipping around in your hand
The plastic is zytel.

Someone said it probably had considerable blade play, Not true It locked up nice and secure no play at all.

Someone also said it had a thin liner lock, also not true. It had one of the thickest and stiffest liners I ever found. If you open and close this knife alot duing the day you will get a sore spot on your thumb from the lock. I took a dremmel tool with a small blue stone grinding point and knocked back the square edge of the lock where your thumb hits it and all better.

The blade held an edge pretty well, as well as you can expect any aus6 blade to.

The palstic thumb bob is cheap and kinda tacky however it can be replaced with one of the screw on ones from any of the knife supply places like Texasknife.com

The knife is light so it's nice to carry and the pouch is first rate, (Better than the ones you get with Microtech) Heavy weight nylon web, horizontal or vertical carry.

This is one CRKT's first knives, one of the knives CRKT made their reputation on. High quality for not high bucks.

The price is more then what they last sold for but they aren't made any more either so that's neither here nor there. It's not like you could buy a new one at a lower price.

I don't think you're getting robbed for the price. I don't know how much CRKT knives run in Austraila they make a lot of good knives that sell in the US. in this same price range now. the large Crawford Kasper would make a good substitute for this knife and it has full liners. Food for thought.

Thanks for that excellent review. Good to hear from somebody who actually had one. Maybe I'll put in a bid. I think it would probably a good knife to leave out in the feed shed where it could get used for just about anything, including being left out in the rain occasionally.

Thanks for that, a generous offer. If I see something I like I'll certainly keep you in mind.

Great bunch of people here on Bladeforums!

Generally speaking, those were good knives, like Ilovetoolsteel, I have the clip point model.

These are pretty nice models, the clipped model was based on Hammond's Cobra Gold model. Everything Ilovetoolsteel said is correct. In the $40 range they were pretty respectable models. They were also one of the first models Columbia River produced.

The only negatives I can think of are:
1) The guard on the knife is annoying if you like to put thumb pressure on the back of the blade as you cut.

2) The handle is pretty thick, not really pocketable.

3) That serrated Tanto pattern blade isn't going to be that great for general work, but to each, his own.

Don't know anything about the knife. I Oz terms the price is about right as long as you don't get bid up on it. I wouldn't pay anymore than the starting price.

Re the seller - I buy a lot of knives off this bloke - he has some good bargains at times. You can trust what he says I have had no problems with him. Happy Bidding.

Thanks for all the advice. I did put in a bid but it was almost immediately outbid. It's gone over $60 now which is more than I want to pay for something to leave lying around in the feed shed.

Thanks for the recommendation on the seller JDEEBLADE, I'll keep him in mind while I'm looking.
