Hello everyone
I'm new to the forum and must say that you folks have saved me alot of money from the various reviews I have read. I have searched for opinions on one particular knife but can't seem to find much of anything. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with the Colt Combat Commander single piece special operations knife. The only info. I have been able to find on this knife is the description at

Any info on this knife would be greatly appreciated before I waste the 40 bucks.
Thanks

I don't own one, but I will make the following comments:

440A is pretty corrosion resistant, why they would put black teflon on is a question. (stealth ?)

I'd confirm it's really black teflon and not just black paint.

I'd be really surprised if the marketing hype about seals was true.

I'd imagine the handle is pretty uncomfortable during hard use. ( I had a knife with a similar handle, it was uncomfortable)

On the other hand it's only $35, so it's not too important if you like it. BUT for 35 you could get a Kabar, of known steel, known finish, and more comfortable handle. Unless of course you don't like Kabars.

I think your right about the black paint thing. I also don't buy the Navy seal marketing. Why is it that every fixed blade that seems remotely tough looking was "developed for navy seals, army rangers, passed the most rigorous military testing , blah, blah, blah" It gets old doesn't it?

I've really been thinking about exactly what I expect out of the knife I'm looking for and I think I'm gonna pick up one of those Camillus Arc-lite neck knives instead. It seems more suited for my needs and it appears most of the people who own one have had positive comments on this site.

Thanks for the input

o.k. bear with me, I did some research on the colt combat commander and found out a couple of things. Most importantly I found out that there are very few people on the internet in any newsgroup or anywhere that have commented on this knife.

1)it is produced by united cutlery (excuse my rookieness but I think that is a bad thing right?)
2)it is indeed Teflon and not black paint (but I think it is a very thin layer of Teflon)
3) very few owner comments on this knife but a couple of things people seem to agree on. It's a solid hunk of steel that is effective at prying things and can stand up to abuse and although not razor sharp out of the box it can be be made that way easily.

So now I'm changing my mind and I think I'm going to buy this thing from smoky mountain knife works for $29.99 out of morbid curiosity alone.

I don't have one of these, but have been looking at a lot of less expensive knives lately. It can be tough when you're starting out, come to a place like this, and all anyone is really interested in talking about is $100+ knives (at a minimum, so it seems), up through the $300-$500 customs, up into the $1500+ stratosphere. There isn't a lot of info out there on the sub $50 "user" knives.

I did find that the "gun" knives (Colt, S&W, etc) are (of course) not made by the gun manufacturers, and are generally made by some low-end knife company ("United" for instance), who is licensed to toss (whoever's) logo onto it. I got to handle a S&W "Choppin' Horse" at a local store, and could not believe how cheap and flimsy it felt for a $35 knife. Cheap, flimsy scales, a way-off-center liner lock, and lots of side to side play in the blade. Of course, you can get these online for $15. But for that money I'd much prefer the CRKT Mirage I got for $14. They (the "gun" knives) are "cheap knives" and it is general worth one's while to save your money until you can take the next step up to the $40-60 knives from Spyderco, Cold Steel, CRKT, etc.

Also remember to compare actual prices you'll pay for things, not the MSRP, which is usually ridiculously high (eg, MSRP on a Spydie Matriarch is $120; 1SKS has them for $49). Also check on Ebay, though be very careful buying things there.

If you want a skeleton fixed blade, look at CRKT, Newt Livesay, and Running Dog for a much wiser expendidture.

Thanks for the advice. I was running some errands after work and decided to pop into the army surplus store. Low and behold they had a knife almost identical to the colt commander (the only difference that I could tell was the lack of the word colt on the knife). After handling it for a minute or two I realized that it did seem cheap and there was just something not right about the handle, I can't put my finger on it but something was off. So I will take your advice and look into those other brands.

So, you have a very limited budget, you are looking for a 6 or 7 inch skeletonized handle knife, you want it to be at least somewhat rugged. What do you buy?
Right now I'm thinking the arc-lite or one of the crkt peck kiss jobbers.
?????

I just wanted to point out that much of ParaGlock's criticism doesn't apply here because this is a fixed blade which is much easier to do! This could be a fine knife for its price. I don't have any personal experience with this knife, and I don't generally go for such thick (3/16") stock in a medium-short (4+ inches) blade. I agree with someone's comment that it might become uncomfortable in long use situations, but it might be a good kind of knife to toss into a car kit for road emergencies, etc.

Even large factories like United Cutlery can get it right sometimes and produce a reasonable deal. Other makers (like Livesay) are sure to be better, but I don't think they make anything nearly this size for $30!
