I was contacted about 3 months ago about making a knife for somone who is going on a camping outing in New Mexico in October. I fit him in to get his knife finished by Sept. Well his knife has been done for 3 weeks and I havent heard from him. I have left him messages...........
As of Sept 12th I am going to consiter his knife as one that is available to be sold. Am I being to quick to want to move this knife out of the shop? I cant hold it knowing that I may NEVER hear from him but what if he calls and its sold??

If so, I'd write him a quick note stating such intentions, if not, then leave him a polite message saying same. You can't hold work forever: you have to get paid. If he seems incredulous on hearing such news, ask him if he would be ok with his employer just pay him when it's convenient, or maybe not at all!, because that's what he's asking you to do.
Just as an aside; I don't take orders but I know most of you do. I don't think I'd take any order without a hard address for correspondence AND credit card shipping. If you ship to any other address other that a card holder's billing address on file, you may not get paid as they can dispute shipping and recieving. Lots of scam artists use a card then have the merchandise shipped elsewhere so you can't blame the card companies.

just left a message that his job will be held untill the 15th. I thought thats what I should do so thanks for the opinion.

Just had they same thing happen to me about two months ago, you are doing the right thing. we sell knives not house them, I felt bad after I sold it thou, so when I completed a knife that was similar I offered it to him first , kind of a peace offering, But I still haven't heard from him. So I sold it to another guy and figured buddy really dosen't want a knife.

If you have given him ample time to respond and he doesn't, SELL, SELL,Sell. odds are he ran out of cash. If not make him another. :D

Thats what I am thinking. He was pretty arogant that the money was no option.........
No Problem, I'd like to have one on my available page :) I aint mad at em' :D

Good advice here Brian.

The problem is that most folks are too embarrassed to just come out and say that they don't have the money for the knife. Or they're worried the maker will wig out on them.

Truth is, we'd rather just hear a yay or nay from them (I would anyway). It's much more upsetting to me, to have indifference and no answer, than them just saying they no longer want or can afford the knife.

Sounds like your knife will be up for sale around the 15th

Fortunatly I've only had something like that happen twice since I've been making. It actually happend once if you consider it being the same person getting me twice over a 3 year time frame. Remember the "Hog Slayer Hawk" I did after the Blade Show? That was the second time he got me. He had ordered one almost identicle 3 years earlier. Both times when the piece of was ready I got the same story from him. "I don't have a checking account or credit cards. I'll be sending you a money order or a certified check but since I'm working 7 days a week, 12 hour days it may take awhile for me to get you a payment." He strung me along the first time but once I heard the payment story on the second order I knew I'd been had.

makes you wonder how he pays his bills  :)

I keep them serious with a deposit, I don't have time to mess with bozo's,,
and you'll get them,, a 12 year old can order from you if you think about it..
but with a deposit you'll weed some of the bad out.. this is not to say that taking orders with out money down is all bad, but it does save on a few problems..

Deposits will keep a few of the spur of the moment guys away and I have never had a person that realy wanted a knife resent the fact that I asked for a deposit.

After that amount of time,I would sell it as well.Your doing the right thing.
And I agree,money up front,HARD address.It is a must these days.Never too careful.Good luck....Kristy

Well, one good thing about NOT getting a deposit is that I can sell it and he cant say squat about it. Looks like I'll be haveing one as available in a few days :)

I do take some deposits but not on everything. I may have to change my tune aout that
