I tried contacting Lee Oates (Bearclaw Knives) for a traditional Japanese style clay heat treat on a knife and didn't get a response. Any other ideas for me?

Hey Steve, how ya doin?? Haven't seen you post in ages. The bone cracking business treating you well?

I use clay coats. Want steel are you using and what do you want from the process? I may be able to help or point you in the right direction at least.

L6, things are going slowly but surely. Health care is a tough industry to break on your own, but it's building every month, so I can't complain! The important thing is that I am helping a lot of people.

Epsilon, I guess I should've posted the details of the knife again:
Knife is a somewhat traditional tanto (no chisel grinds, hard angles, etc). I am making it as a gift. OAL is probably 10-12 inches with a 5-6 inch blade. File ground with a convex profile and a small false edge that goes about 4/5 of the length of the blade. I gound in a little curve (what would probably occur naturally when the hot blade hits water during quenching), and I have ground the blade to a finished edge (I've not had a problem quenching blades with a finished shape, so far!). Steel is 1/8" thick 1084, 1" width. Normally I heat treat my own stuff, but to do a blade this length I would need more propane torch power or mess with making a heat box to really get a good heat and I just don't want to go through it. Anyway, I guess since it is a more traditional-looking blade, I'd like to get a real Japanese-style clay heat treat done on it so I can finish it and display a nice-looking hamon. Any help is appreciated, and if you want to email me privately, try agocs_s@hotmail.com.
