Need Police Advice on Neck Carry

I have recently been carrying a neck knife on a daily basis, in preparation for a Patrolman I ordered. I was wondering about proper neck knife carry etiquette in the eyes of the law. Blade length in legal, and knife is nearly totally hidden from sight of others. Knife is never taken out for chores, for I have pocket folders/multitools for that.

Just wondering how Police Officers feel about neck knives, and whether they are deemed more aggressive than standard belt or pocket carry.

thank you

I know you want an answer from a leo,but I would still like to say my opinion.I'm not familiar with the laws in the city, but basically its either legal or illegal depending on where someone resides, blade length, concealed or open carry etc..If it is a legal item and the way your carrying it is legal,I wouldn't care what an leo thought because I'm perfectly legal. However if it is illegal and I was a leo,my first thought would be that if someone was carrying around the neck it probably is a knife for defense as opposed to a utility purpose. An leo's perception of your neck knife will depend alot on each leo's personnel views and knowledge of knives. In todays day and age alot of people think all knives are offensive weapons and are bad,as well as the people who carry them. However;as you said in your post, your knife is not for everday utility. If it stay's hidden an leo isn't going to know you have it,and in my 30 years on this earth,I've never been searched.I'm not sure if I answered the point your trying to make,of course since I'm not an leo,my post is kinda of useless anyway

Hello,

Now my brother in law is a cop and the only law that he has told me the cops are concerned about is the 4" blade limit. No Knuckle knives, balisong, batons, chains, double edged, automatics. Nothing on neck knives.

I personally belief is how you dress and carry yourself. If you look like a perp then there is more of a chance you might get searched. I personaly carry two everyday. I carry fixed blades on my belt. I hate carry anything around my neck it is just uncomfortable. Plus if you are running for a train the knife have a tendency to swing around and drop. Yes drop. I have a few knives from custom makers that have really bad kydex sheaths. The best thing is to check with your local cops on the laws in your neighborhood. Carry yourself in a good manner. Hope this helps.

Howdy,
I have to disagree with with the Ancient One on one point.... I've found out that asking cops what the laws are pertaining to weapons is an exercise in futility.
There's too many statutes for anyone to know 'em all by heart, and if you ask a cop that doesn't know you, he'll just give you whatever answer will cover is own butt.
Alright, there's probably a number of people that will give you accurate information, especially the ones that frequent this forum. But to call Headquarters and ask what kinda knife is legal for you to carry will not result in getting the info that you need. Check the statutes in NYC... I think that Ancient One's right about the 4 inch limit, but I don't know if that means you're allowed to carry a knife smaller than that, concealed.

He's right about how you present yourself.... if you look and act like an upstanding guy, chances are that you won't be bothered, but relying on the statutes is your best bet.

Definitely check your state statutes. You should be able to find them from most search engines on the net. Most likely you will need to look up two things - the definition of a weapon, and the concealed carry laws. Both states I have lived in were similar. A concealed weapon is a concealed weapon, whether it be a gun, knife, etc. Only the punishments are different. In your situation, if you lived in Florida, you would need a concealed carry permit (yes, the one for firearms) to carry in the manner you described. That's comming straight out of the statutes. However, they have recently added to this that you may carry a pocket knife in your pocket without retribution, but they neglected to define pocket knife, and your description of carry would not fall into this category.

Most LEO's I know do not frown on self defense weapons, or even concealed carry, just keep it legal. However, I would rather see you in legal trouble than injured or killed.

Copper....what about batons in FL? OI can't find anything on them. I have a concealed weapons permit. Thanks for your help.
