I need a big favor.

My father-in-law recently received a very nice wood-handled chiruwa AK as a gift from a very generous forum member.

He's tickled pink about it and wants to know more - khukuris, H.I., gurkhas, etc.

I told him "there's this great website on the internet..."

He told me "Well...you see, I prefer to actually sit down and thumb through a good book..."

Long story short = what books can I recommend to him?

Also, would anybody be willing to print a few of the H.I. website pages (in color) so he can see the pictures of the kamis, etc.?

He said if I printed it and mailed it to him, he would read it. He has actually never laid a finger on a computer. Hard to imagine nowadays, but not so hard given his lifestyle and age. I don't have access to a color printer (or even a decent printer for that matter) and I know that may be asking a bit much anyway.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Dan

Dan-- the only book on Gurkhas/khukuris I've read is The Gurkhas by Byron Farwell. Not too much info on khuks, more a military history of the Gurhkas. It's probably worth a read if you can find it for a good price.

Gurkhas at War: In Their Own Words: The Gurkha Experience 1939 to the Present by J. P. Cross

I got this from a post a month back or so JP gave a list, but this is the only one that I can find now.

Pen, send me an email, with your address and I will print you the website.

John Powell has a couple of chapters on a web site, one recently mentioned in another thread in the past week or so. I presume John gave permission. My printer died, but someone may be able to help you with those chapters.

Good luck.

Dan, I'm printing JP's info as we speak. Will mail it to you.

Steve

Oops, just read that it can't be reproduced without permission. I'm sure John will read this and ok it, but I'll stop until he does. The FAQ is printing now.

Dan, if I'm not misremembering, the now defunct "Ghurka House" had an actual video tape titled "The Making of a Khukuri", or something like that. A copy of that tape would be priceless in educating a newbie, and even some not so newbies, on what khuks are all about.

p.s.: if I were king for a day, I'd send a professional production crew to Bir Ghorka and capture master Lal Bahadur and the boys on film for posterity. What a priceless treasure that would be. Unfortunately priceless, as in nothing I could ever afford, is right.:(

Thanks guys!

Can I get someone to print the page Beo posted?

I think that will do it. Perhaps we might persuade JP to post some of his "works cited" here as well...

Dan, sounds like you're covered for printed lists, but if you need anything else please write me directly. With my usual problems of getting back on the forum (thanks again BEO) the email may be wrong. This is correct: jpsf@sbcglobal.net

The tape "Making of a kukri" is really well done and worth finding.
