Need quick help deciding...

I'm about to pull the trigger (tonight) on a Hell Razor before the order page goes away for them. My knife budget has been a little stretched lately so I am probably going to stick with a standard finish for the handle and blade. I thought it would be no problem deciding, but now I'm stuck with flipping back and forth between the two open pages on finishes and handles.

I had planned to do a black canvas with OD green blade but now I'm not sure. I like the same combination in my RW but I also like the tan/tan of my Desert Jack. 'course, the black paper on black looks really great too?!?!? Is the black paper *that* fragile? I don't want to rule out this being a user...

Help, please! I'm not used to this many choices with my beloved Rats and, if you can't tell, this is my first INFI.

Thanks!

IMO I'd go Tan/Tan:thumbup: NO!! wait a minute, Black/Black seems great also? Did this help you:D

The black paper micarta is not fragile, but for a user, the canvas is more grippier.

Much like the rats, pork warranty is rock solid, so "fragility" and being a user is not a problem. Beat the heck out of it!!! I would also consider the type of handle, i.e. regular versus magnum. I don't have the magnums on my HOG FSH and actually wish I did get them since I believe that it would feel more connected. As a reference, I normally wear a size large in gloves.

Congrats on the first piece of INFI, you won't regret it. However your credit card will. Welcome to the slippery trough... I mean slope. :D

In a word, no. Even though it is not as tough as linen or canvas, paper micarta is still incredibly strong stuff. It is not as "grippy" as the other versions, but the Busse texture helps with that. And it is much better than polished G10. Raw and bead blasted G10 is about on par with canvas micarta, in my opinion.

Quoting from the mother-ship:

Paper Micarta has the smoothest texture of the three and although rated as the least durable of the three, it still exceeds all natural and most synthetic materials being used for knife handles today.

It is my favorite, almost tied with Snakeskin. Look at the knives in the bottom left of this picture.

As stated above, paper micarta is not fragile, and with the texturing shouldn’t be slippery, but I like canvas micarta for users.

Keep in mind that the Hell Razor is 3/16” thick, and that you might want to consider magnum handles to fill the handle out. In this case you’re down to choosing between magnum tan or black canvas.

rbmcmjr, Nice collection! Something tells me you like a satin finish. ;) Thanks for the picture!

Paddling_man, Any micarta is durable, so go with the one that you think looks the best. Congratulations on your first Busse!

You know, I'm think I am between black/black paper and tan/black canvas.

But one other comment got me wondering. "Keep in mind that the Hell Razor is 3/16” thick, and that you might want to consider magnum handles to fill the handle out."

As I look at my Rat handles (respectively: RM, RW & DJ) even though the DJ blade is thinner, the micarta slaps are made thicker on it so all three handles are the same width. This is typically true of the SF handles on different thicknesses of blades or not? Hmmm... more decisions!

Thanks for the feedback so far.

The standard handles on my SFNO are thin, and the blade is .22” thick, so I’ve gone for magnum handles on the Hell Razor.

I haven't decided?! I figured I could change it when they called tomorrow to confirm the order. :o

All right. I got the call from Kendra this morning regarding the email order. Since my boss was standing there, I didn't want to ask too many questions and he find out I was paying $300 for a blade. "If you can afford that, you don't need a raise!"

So, I went with my original request and didn't ask any questions about magnum slabs. I'll be getting tan with SF standard black canvas. (No regrets, right??)

Thanks for the feedback!

I ordered the HR with tan/tan to kinda match the inficoots and desert jack. Where the devil did this black battle rat come from:confused:

Huh? Do you mean the black/black Rat Mastiff I posted in the handles comparison? Or do you mean the stock, discontinued but soon to be reincarnated, Battle Rat?

If that's what you mean, switch on over the the Swamp Rat forum and I (or someone else if they're faster :p) will answer the question. :D The Hogs get kinda nasty when we post too much about their Rat brothers over here on their forum. :)

No regrets … absolutely none!

It won’t be your last Busse, and you can try different handles on different knives.

Congratulations.
