I have a brand new CQC7 I just brought home and I would like to make three customizations to it.

-Strip the current coated blade finish and have it tumbled/stonewashed.

-Replace the black scales with tan G10

-Replace the black back spacer with tan G10

I would want the scales and spacer to be just like the OEM ones, just in tan. Not sure how many shades of tan G10 comes in but I would like something darker like a coyote tan used on AR furniture.

And the finish stripped and stonewashed if possible, bead blast if not.

Thanks.

I see a few iffy things in there that are problematic, at least for me. One, I don't stone wash the blades. I don't have a tumbler anymore or the means to even do that for you.

Two, I cannot texture the G10 like the OEM scales. I don't know of anyone other than factory knives doing that actually although that does not mean it isn't being done by someone.

Also, I have not seen any tan G10 but I guess you have somewhere. I have done some Emersons and I think at least one BenchMade and a couple of my own custom lockback folders in what could maybe be viewed as a tan Micarta but its more of an off yellow color. What it is sold as is Antique linier paper Micarta supposed to be closer to looking like mastodon ivory from what I've been told about it. Perhaps that is what you saw. Here is a pic of one I did a while back for another forum member in the thumbnails below. These two pics of it closed are before I did the finish work and grooving obviously but it can show the color well which is why I selected them. You can click those thumbnails to enlarge them. This resembles G10 a lot but its actually Micarta.

I looked at my supply list and don't see any tan G10 but I have not checked other catalogs so I'm thinking you saw something like this that I or another craftsman did on a knife maybe.

The other thing that is something I'd need to look at closer is that the spacer on that knife or any Emerson for that matter is a thick piece compared to the liners and scales. I remember looking to replace one with a new spacer of titanium once and although the measurements elude my memory currently, I do recall that I did not have a piece thick enough to fill the need and I have some scraps of .160 titanium laying around out there in my shop. So, in all liklihood you are looking at having to purchase a block of two different thickness G10 sheets just for one knife. My supplier sends me 5" x 12" sheets in various thicknesses so it seems like a lot of material to have to purchase for just a single knife. Not that this is unique, I've seen many do it and do the same with a full sheet of titanium also. I'm just letting you see it from the stand point of the material needs to do it from some vendors.

I do however have plenty of that Antique linier paper in 1/8" thickness left if that is what you are speaking of.

If you are wondering why I'm trying to determine so much detail for a simple job let me add that my lungs and G10 dust do not go together well due to my asthma and I have a slight allergy to the dust so I try to time using that or G11 for days when I can turn on the fans, open the barn doors and vent the shop very well while wearing my respirator so I typically do whatever I can to avoid a lot of sanding or plaining of that material at all cost. In other words I am not too interested in buying a block 3/8" thick to have to cut and flat sand it down to the final thickness if I can find it very close to what is called for.

The job pictured above was scales only. These run anywhere from $85 on up to $120 depending on material and the amount of shaping, thumb grooving and time. I have not priced a spacer but I don't expect it would take too long or add much once the material is found in the proper thickness.

I hope that helps to give you a ball park idea.

Thanks for asking and feel free to look around, and ask questions. There are picture galleries to my work in the link to my home page as well as here on my forum showing a small sample of some of what I've done for members knives over the last few years. One album comes up right away and you can click the STRprojects link to see the other one once there if interested.

I've seen the tan/sand/coyote brown etc...G10 on several knives. The one I'm most familiar with is my Benchmade Nimravus shown below...

I also have a silver Emerson skull clip on order to replace the OEM black one. I would like all the hardware and blade to match. If the stonewash finish is a no go then what other options do I have? Bead blast, satin etc...?

I could bead blast it yes. I actually did that to my own CQC14 blade and some others from Emerson that all looked pretty good. Those pics should be here in this forum posted somewhere or in one of the pic galleries of mine. I bead blasted that CQC13 in my galleries that I turned into a frame lock.

But what I'd suggest first is to mail me the knife and let me get detailed measurements of it to know what thickness we need for the spacer. I'll place a call to some of the suppliers I use to try to track down the tan G10 or coyote brown or whatever they are calling it and try to find a pic of it so we know at least with some idea of what would be coming to me.

Here is another shot of a tan/brown G10 they're using on the Gunner Grips...

What sort of pattern or finish is possible that would be a close match to the OEM panels?

Thanks!

I have no way of doing that myself.

I'd suggest contacting Sherry Abrahams who does wood checkering and ask her if she would checker it for you. I've used her for doing wood handles and it is quite spectactular what she did with some plain jane handle scales I put on a Spyderco Salt1 I rebuilt. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=59912&d=1158022157

Sherry is top notch and a member here also. Tell her I sent you. I know you can find her by typing in her name or wood checkering in Google.
