I'm pretty sure the distance is the same on the HRLM, and Shotgun, I have the same issue. For the most part any space between using edge and handle is wasted space that increases weight and decreases ease of use, in my opinion. I can say the HRLM is the most ergonomic blade of its size that I have yet used, even with the choil. The using edge starts within the distance of most blades' ricassos from the end of the handle, so I doubt you will have an issue with it.
The distance is not the same.
Look at this pic:
I have a Respirene C Howling Rat gen 2 and don't like how big the choil is. The cutting edge seems so far from your hand that you almost have to use the choil. There's no sense in having a knife that's almost and inch longer than a Fallkniven F1 but has a cutting edge that's 3/8" shorter than the F1.
Judging from the pic, the Res C Howler's choil is at least twice the size of the HRLM.
I tried looking for a HRLM because I like the looks of the choil on that, but they cost so much on the secondary market.
Instead I ordered a RMD straight from Swamp Rat. At first I didn't want the RMD because I thought it was going to be bigger than I wanted; turns out it handles great and doesn't look as big as it is in person.
The RMD has a usable choil, but IMO the choil doesn't hinder this knife anywhere near as much as on the Res C howlers. The handle shape is great and I think it helps overcome the choil distance factor even if you're gripping the knife normally. The handle of the micarta models is higher up on the blade essentially reducing the size of the ricasso; not to mention the Res C adds thickness right under the finger guard.
Shotgun, you'd better hurry. Go ahead and buy one from the factory store before they run out. They've taken 3 available RMD color combos off of their web site since I ordered mine less than a week ago.
If you don't like the choil then selling it for at least what you paid will be a piece of cake. You might even make a few bucks on it.
IMO there's no reason to pass up the chance to buy a RMD at factory price.
I like the looks of the HRLM and I really really wanted one, but the fact is they're hard to find or cost over $200.
