Peanut, or mini trapper for school? And how do you guys use the separate on the two knives?

What do you mean by school? College? Certain blade restrictions?
I usually carry a peanut, anyway. I like the smaller size, but it is not too small that you don't know it is not there.

The peanut is too small for my tastes, so if it's a choice between only those two knives, I'd go with the mini trapper.

Between the peanut and mini trapper I'd go with the mini trapper although the peanut is a good size imo. Now, if the question was between the peanut and tiny trapper, it would be peanut all the way unless you had a 2" blade restriction. Below is an old pic I have of a peanut, tiny trapper, and mini trapper for comparison.

How's about a Case Baby Doc? Handsome little devils, with quite a few different scale options to be had...

Good luck! :)

Nice comparison photo, Trand. If I were to choose between the two, I'd go with the Mini Trapper... a Clip and Wharncliffe blade mini trapper with jigged bone, 6207W.

Thanks Jake. Example 6207W. I think these are only in Tru Sharp.

Another option can be the 5207WDam

I think I'd take the peanut as I doubt you would need a larger blade very often. Also since most colleges are bastions of liberalism these days the smaller and "prettier" a knife the less attention it will probably attract if you do need to use it. Probably not a good idea to clean your fingernails with it in the middle of class.

I have huge paws, and I have been surprises at how easy it is for me to manipulate a peanut. Carl is right, you will get a lot of oohs and aahs from non knife people, not the "Oh my God, do you think he wants a piece of cheese" (see that, clever little Arthur reference...)

Arthur: He's taking the knife out of the cheese!
Linda: Oh, my God!
Arthur: Do you think he wants some cheese?
Linda: No, I think we're gonna die!

Hi,

I would lean to the Peanut myself. Elegant to look at and tough enough to hoe the row.

But I have taught all 4 of my Daughters and now my Nieces as they go off to collage, there are 3 things you never leave home without - Your cell phone, your keys, and your Vic Classic. No matter what, never get separated from those 3 items. And they all follow that rule. And to their amazement, that Classic will quickly become the most favored piece of kit. So my advise is to carry what you will, but make sure that Classic stays handy.

Two knives that you will never, ever, get an grief over is the Case peanut and the Victorinox classic. Either one will fit in on a liberal college campus, and I'd be very surprised if some of the learned profs don't have a little Vic on a keyring. To put it in some perspective; Victorinox makes as many classic's a year as Buck has made 110 folding hunters since it's begining in 1963. I see them on keyrings all over the place.

I've used a Case peanut in public many many times, and never a bad reaction. Those reactions have ranged from a young man going all nostalgic on me because his grandad carried a knife like that, outside of an IKEA when I helped him cut some line, to an elderly church lady looking at my bone stag peanut and remarking what a pretty little kife it was, to a 50ish silver haired lady librarian wanting to examine my amber bone and damascus peanut because she thought it beautiful enough to be a piece of jewelery.

Either one will be fine on a liberal arts campus. Heck, get both, we're not talking a lot of money here!

Carl.

I knew you would say this and I don't disagree with you

edit: Also, the peanut is much lighter than the mini-trapper. You can forget you're even carrying the peanut until you need it. Same with the classic.
