I need a gift for an IN-LAW in his mid 30's. He is described as having the taste of someone in his 70's, living back in the 1940's, and I'd like to pick up a knife or TWO for him. His purported taste is why I've ventured into this domain, where I am otherwise unfamiliar.

My personal Criteria is to stay in the $20-$30 range and perhaps even buy two in the $20 range. Fixed and folder recommendations both appreciated.

Not knowing what he has, a couple of suggestions:

  • Yellow Case Sodbuster Junior
  • Swiss Army Knife Silver ALOX

Both of these are traditional and safe (any guy should like these). Both in the $22.000 to $25.00 range.

The Hawk may be right on:

Case Sod Buster
Victorinox Soldier!!!
Victorinox Executive
Buck 55

The Sod Buster was out of stock at my distributor. I'm placing a large order so I would like to add-on, rather than seek a different distributor. I have a SAK in the basket per your recommendation (great suggestions!). Keep 'em coming please! Perhaps something with stag or walnut handles perhaps?

Stag handles likely put you out of the $20.00 - $30.00 range. Another traditional knife I would suggest would be a Buck Cadet 303.

It can be had for around $25.00 too. Maybe a little more.

The Buck 373 Trio is a nice wooden handled knife, and are under $20.00, made in China.

Both of these knives are 3 1/4" closed length.

They had the Buck 373 in stock so I added one of those to the cart. Looks like a great start. Any more suggestions would be welcome. I'll narrow it down and bite the bullet later. Thanks for taking the time to post picture also Thawk, it is very helpful :D

What does he do for a living, and how does he dress? The answer to those two questions will help determine what kind of a knife he can carry, and is likely to carry. For example, a man wearing a suit would not carry a Sodbuster or Trapper. They are just too big and heavy in the pocket of a thin pair of dress pants. On the other hand, a man wearing carpenter pants is likely in need of more knife than a delicate Senator or Baby Butterbean. We can better help you if you give us a bit more context.

I believe he is more of the Carpenter type. Good question. Thanks!

German Eye Brand Sodbuster (or Sodbuster Jr.in 1095 and yellow scales, or a Case stockman in CV (also carbon steel) and yellow handles. The aforementioned Buck knives are fantastic performers, but slightly less old fashioned because of the stainless steel, and you would need to buy the China version to hit your pricepoont (I have one and it's a good performer, BTW).
