Need recommendation for a simple DV editor

I've been capturing a whole bunch of old analog VHS home movies, and I need a simple digital video editor. I basically need a cheap/freeware editor that can take a big, 3gb chunk of Mpeg2, and slice it up into little scenes that can be saved and renamed, possibly compressed into other formats such as divx or xvid.

Any recommendations would be welcomed. Thanks in advance.

I love Windows Movie Maker, and it's available from Microsoft as a free download if you have Windows. It works very intuitively and it's well-designed.

I prefer Imovie, intuitive and easy. i managed to make a videocollage for a wedding the first time I used it. It takes a lot of RAM and disc space to go quickly but it is fun and easy if you have that. 512 mb and 4 gig are barely enough, 2 gig and 10 gig HD space will make it sing, remember, that extra space is just used in the editing process, once you output to the tape, it is all free again.
