Just as the title says, I’m looking for a decent fixed blade under $40, in the 5.5-7” range (tough ask, I know). I’m trying to round out a gift hard purchase on that ‘big river’ site, so it has to be available there.

Looking for a knife that I can abuse around the campsite for a while. Just a toy really. Like I said, using up the remains of a gift card, so it’s a “no money outta my pocket” deal. (Might be willing to add in another $10)

Currently looking at the Cold Steel Recon Tanto, as it’s on sale for right in that range, but really know nothing about the SK-5 steel.

I see a few interesting looking Chinese offerings, but all names I’ve absolutely never heard of - and most in the sub 5” range, which I have plenty of. But I’m open to something unknown if it’s actually going to hold up to a little abuse.

SRK should be in the same price range as the recon tanto. I think a drop point would be more useful around a campsite.

SK-5 is reasonably close to 1080 carbon steel.

Right now I’m leaning towards the CS Recon Tanto, or the SRK. Sr definitely seems more practical, but I like the extra length and, quite frankly the tacti-cool nature of the Tanto (it is gonna be a toy after all LOL). But now I’ve found a monkey wrench to throw into the situation…

Kershaw Camp 10 - It’s really more of a small machete, but also gets good reviews. So now I’m conflicted, because, well, I could see a use for any one of the three.

Cold Steel , either SRK or Recon Tanto .:thumbsup::thumbsup:

The former is better all around utility knife . But some people do use tanto knives for utility also .

For your budget and size requirements the SRK or Recon tanto will be hard to beat, although at the lower end of your size requirement ime and opinion the 140mm Terava Jaakaripuuko is a better knife.

I've all of them and of the 3 the Terava is tougher and the better "camp" knife, it's a little over budget but worth it imo.

forgot to update. I ended up going with the CS Recon Tanto. Really, just because it’s a totally unnecessary purchase and I don’t really have anything similar.

Will it make an OK camp knife? Heck, I don’t know, but it’ll be fun to play around with until I decide to buy an ESEE 6, or such. Till then, for $40 it’ll be a cool beater.
