In Gil's book about throwing knives, he states his throwing axe is also designed for utility. I am considering buying one for fun and camping since it looks pretty cool. Anyone actually bought one and used it? What about his other throwing knives?

I have one of his throwing axes and it works pretty well for that purpose. I sharpened the spike on the reverse of the head, as well as the rear tip of the handle. It will stick in a foam archery target from a lot of different angles.

The handle is relatively average thickness metal stock (probably 1/4"---I don't have it here in the office to check). I doubt it would be comfortable for extended utility use. The steel seems relatively soft, as you would expect for a thrower. Mine doesn't seem to hold an edge too well. If you buy one, I wouldn't plan on using it for anything but throwing and maybe some very light and very occasional utility chopping.

I don't much like the Hibben throwing knives, but that's just personal preference. A lot of people throw them fine. I prefer the thrower from H & B Forge ( www.hbforge.com )and the Cold Steel throwers recommended by Two Hawks and available at www.2hawks.net

My favorite thrower is an old Blackjack Broadhead, but those are no longer available (unless they have been recently reintroduced, in which case I'm buying half a dozen this time around!).

I have had a Pro thrower 1 for about 4 years or 5. I heat my house by wood, and that axe goes with me to cut it every time. I think the blade steel it perfect for the task. If it is too hard, it will be prone to chiping and cracking. Too soft, and you have one of mt wood spliters! So soft you could hammer it in to any shape! I do agree that it is for light work. Those curves dig in bad after a while, but a good pair of leather gloves will fix that. It has been a real work horse, and well worth the money! But thats just IMO....

P.S. I never could throw the thing like I can a real hawk....
