I am going to buy a new "expensive" knife and like the look and reputation that Microtech has but don't know anyone that has one of these knives personaly.
Have any of you had any day to day experience with this knife?
The blade style isn't an issue for me just the life of the knife and how it holds up with daily use (heavy and light) blade retention/fragility, stability of the blade, does the spring power degrade, handle, clip, screws......anything that you have noticed or found to be a strength or problem.
Any help would be great:confused: .
Thanks

safedge, hi I have had a Microtech Scarab DE Serrated Stonewashed for a week, so not much help on the long haul, but the knife is very well made. If you are looking for a great deal check with Robert Bartoli www.thebrightedge.com. Tell him Jeff Webster reffered you from bladeforums.

the Scarab is a stout OTF. 'heavy duty' work should be left for fixed blades, but the Scarab can handle anything that a good folder can do. the S30V used in the Scarab is excellent. i have cut extension cord wire and car bumpers with my Scarab and only need to retouch the blade. i have not experienced any chipping. spring power is just as strong as when i got it. i personally feel that the Scarab (or any D/A OTF) is one of the safest 'folding' blade designs out there.

some things to be aware of with the Scarab:

u have to keep the Scarab clean and wipe the blade if it gets dirty, befire u retract the blade.

the Scarab does get dirty on the inside. if u want to maintain the knife a tri-pin screw head is a necessity. be aware that breaking open the Scarab, or any Microtech, will void the warranty. for myself, i don't care, but for others, it will be an issue.

u will have to exersize ur thumb to get used to deploying and retracting the blade. it's not hard, but it does take a little getting used too.

i like the Scarab. i carry one almost everyday. it gets used, and when maintained, is a GREAT knife.

hope this helps.

I have owned many OTF..Most of the OTF Microtech types scarabs,ut6,halo,ct2,etc...MOD triton, a few sandsharks, nato type cheapies, old italian otf,etc...

SCARABS ARE EXCELLENT ! You WILL be very happy.

They work great, they are tough and not to large.

Buy a burn pin wrench to go with your scarab and your all set for many years of OTF FUN !

My first Scarab I owned for about 1 1/2 years. I only sold it because I needed the money.:( I just bought an Executive Scarab Satin Standard blade.:) It is all I remember it to be. I'm happy again!

As said, S30V is good, and MT does the Heat Treat right.

My first Scarab had a very hard draw on the firing button, both closing and opening. It never lost that feel, and my thumb did indeed need to work up to the task of opening it and closing it, and I still could never do a quick out/in motion. Either my thumb is stronger than it used to be, or this new Scarab is easier. I still need to develop a stronger callus on my thumb.

This one rockets open, and I know it will do so for a good long time, so longevity is not an issue with this knife. It uses a double spring, so there is redundancy. People talk about blade-play, but I never notice it when using the knife. Both Scarabs I had were about the same. I like that the clip offers right and left carry options, and it is set up for quite deep carry. Mine still has the screw + tiny spike, rather than the newer single large spike.

One thing to be aware of. If you prefer to carry the knife without the clip, you can't put the screws that hold it on back in. Without the clip to stand the screws off a bit, (if they are tightened all the way against handle) they will interfere with the closing of the knife. They will cause bounce-back.

It's a great knife!

Thank you for your replies. there is a guy here in town that carries Microtech and I asked him if he could get one for me to have a look, but he said they only make them once a year and they were on back order for several months untill they made more. So in a nut shell thank you for your input. I like the spear point blade design better than the thin look of the halo or the tanto styles.
Plus right now I dont have much need for a double edge blade like the fire ant has. Thanks again fo rthe input and I'll check out that site.

Hey Safeedge..

Yaa the Scarab is an awesome knife..
I've had mine for almost a year, and no problems at all..

The only thing was that it was a little dry when I got it...A little spray of SNAP silicone spray,,and it's been flawless..

Very Fast,, Very well made....

You'll like it..
