My usual edc is a Cold Steel Ak-47. I prefer tactical knives ninety percent of the time no matter what i am using them for. It has taken a while to get any blade play out of my edc. I mentioned this to my friend and he showed me a Buck 112BRS Ranger Hunting knife. I loved the wooden handles and it just felt like a strong knife. He recommended some more traditional style knives instead of more tactical stuff i had been looking at.

"No blade play in one of these" he said closing the Buck knife. So i started thinking i may expand my collection to different style knives. This leads me to my question.

would something like that knife be a good choice?

I know nothing about 420hc steel. I am familiar with 440A AUS8A 1095 and 1055 carbon.

So can anyone tell me a bit about it? Oh and about Buck knives. The 110 and 112 specifically. Will there be blade play in those? Any info is appreciated thanks guys! Also more traditional edc suggestions are welcome.

May want to stop by the Buck forums here. The 110 appears to have quite the passionate following over there. I can't say anything good or bad about that particular knife but I just got a Buck Vantage Force Pro and am, so far, very impressed with it especially when taken into account what I paid for it. I'll be buying more Buck knives. Maybe not quite the flashiness of say a ZT but just solid knives at good prices.

I too just bought a Buck Vantage Force Pro and my initial impression of this knife is very favorable. Time will tell if it can handle some real work but it definitely feels solid, especially with the steel backspacer. The stonewashed S30V blade is remarkably handsome as well as the A-TACS camo grips.

I've had a 110 for many years now and while it is an iconic knife and built like a tank (absolutely zero bladeplay; lockbacks usually don't) it never gets pocket time because of its weight and thickness and lack of pocketclip. For EDC I'd have to recommend the Vantage over the 110.

Here's a photo of my Vantage:

Not every 110/112 will be absent of blade play. My 110 has a little. It doesn't bother me.

Unlike most newer designs, it's very handle-heavy, there's usually a bit of resistance to one-hand opening early on, and the brass can tarnish if left in the leather sheath for too long.

The point is a little fragile but that's inherent in the clip/bowie profiles (can't remember what mine looks like, it's been in storage awhile). Lock needs two hands (or a grip adjustment) to close.

I'm being as negative as I can. That's about it.

HTH!
