Need Some Advice! On the Umnumzaan

Hello BF :)

I need some advice! A month ago, I decided to purchase a high-end EDC folder. I have narrowed it down to a CRK Umnumzaan, but still have some doubts. Believe me it's one of the hardest choices I have had to make, but think the Umnumzaan will fill my needs perfectly. I've been searching for a lightweight high-end EDC that can handle everyday circumstances and excel at slicing. My only concern is if the Umnumzaan looks to tactical or aggressive for a college setting. (Walking on campus or in classrooms) Would it rise some eyebrows if someone saw it my pocket or bagback? I checked my university handbook and the knife is within the parameters of what's allowed by campus police. For those who own the knife, what comments have non-people said about your knife?

Thank You

You'll need a little Swiss Army Knife with the tooth pick and tweezers if you want to please non-knife people.

From your description it's probably everything you want but any knife that size will freak the sheeple out.

Personally I'd get it and also a smaller folder so you have the proper tool for the job.

Once at work I took a Lochsa out of my pocket to cut something. You'd think I pulled a severed head out of my pocket from the looks I got.

So descretion is advised and a smaller knife.

Don't sweat it. As long as you are within the laws, up theirs. It is not tactical or dangeros looking at all. Especially since they will only see the clip.

In my experience, it's size more than anything that raises eyebrows. I don't think it would cause alarm more then a Large Seb, but both would draw negative attention in some places. And on that note, where you are is an important factor. Northern campuses, I've never seen a knife clipped to a pocket. Here in Tennessee, I see them all the time.

As long as your within the law, get it.

If your worried about what other people think, get a Mnandi.

The Umnumzaan is a beautiful knife and a workhorse. Although a little more "tactical" looking then say, a Sebenza, it's a knife you'll love to own.

Get it then come back and post some pics!

I'm suprised the Umnumzaan is a legal folder for you to carry on campus. I'm guessing you are attending a southern school or something :). If its legal I dont see the problem, the clip looks harmless and most people wouldnt even know its a knife. I wouldnt really use it on campus though since the blade is pretty intimidating with the harpoon swedge thing going on. I own 3 Umnumzaans and they are my favorite CRK bar none.

It is a descreet carry for me because some of my pants are the clips colors or some of my pants are grey. No one has seen it so far from me cause when they ask for a knife, I reach into a coat pocket and pull out a baby case knife for the sheeple to view

It looks.like a cheap.knife when clipped in a pocket, which is good. Very plain in color in style. Only we(knife people) would know what it is. I carry mine everywhere, besides the gym. I always have my sak on my key ring though and use that for most small tasks. Not scared of pulling out the big blade at all but its not always needed.

LOL!!! Glad I had already swallowed that mouthful of coffee!

okay okay okay officially convinced! I have just ordered my Umnumzaan 5 minutes ago! I'm super duper excited! First CRK.

Looks like i'm late for this one but you made a very good choice my friend. Please let us know your thoughts once you have received and used the knife. If this is your first high end knife than its gonna be harder to use than you may think:D.....once you get your first scratch on one of the scales you will be good to go.

if it is within the schools policy on knives then get it. no one should see it unless you are going to be playing with it in public. I used my large seb in a professional enviroment all the time to open boxes and things and I have yet to hear any complaints. I live in Texas though, and we like our guns and knives

Denko, be careful with that Umnum on a campus. My opinion is to carry something smaller. If an argument can be made, by anyone, that a knife has the potential to used offensively in any fashion, you will find yourself in the muddy waters of unintended consequences. Why risk it? If you really feel the need to carry, and the laws allow it, I would emphasize utility (like SAK) over long, sharp, and pointy. There's no point in possibly putting your academic future at risk for the sake of carrying a cutting tool to class. That's just my 2c from an elevated vantage point.

I really appreciate the good advice, i think i'm gonna have agree with you about carry something smaller on campus. although, i think i'll also purchase something smaller specifically for school. I think that if i carry the knife in a bag pack i'll be ok, but first i'll check if it's okay with campus police.

When I get the knife I'll reevaluate if i'll need another or keep the Umnumzan as a every day EDC.

My first CRK was the Zaan and it's my daily carry. I've had five or six Sebbies, though, and they are great also. I prefer the blade design of the Zaan.
Yes, it has a "tactical" appearance, but if you don't flash it around, nobody will have a problem.

I have been carrying the Umnum everyday as my EDC for a couple years now... Not once have I gotten any weird looks, and I take it out all the time to clean my nails.. (which it does exceedingly well )

I use it all the time at work, and the only thing anybody has ever said to me is "cool knife".

At a different job not too long ago, I pulled it out to cut a box, and the guy training me said "whoah, you dont need a knife like that here, nobody is going to try and attack you. Thats an "im going to kill somebody knife".. put it away. Use this instead" and he hands me a cheap little cutter that holds a razor blade like a boxcutter. tinyiest f'ing knife I have ever seen.

I later talked to my supervisor, and he said it would be no problem if I used it. He even thought it was cool.

That was the only time anyone ever said anything. At a place where i needed a blade pretty much constantly

Needless to say I no longer work there, and only did for a couple weeks. I quit because it was nightshift, and I hate nightshift.

Cheers!
:cool::thumbup:
