I am getting interested in traditionals these days. I bought a few GEC knives and have been trying them out. Found two keepers (#44 and #62), the rest I am going to list on the exchange in the near future. In my search, I found one that I think would be ideal and the photo of it looks excellent. However, I can't find this GEC #92 knife:

I need some advice on this.

Do these drop occasionally, or am I out of luck? Am I stuck watching the secondary market?

If you're looking for the Talon specifically, then you'll have to hit the secondary market. Be prepared to empty your pockets.
If you'd like one with a spear blade and coping blade combo, then I think there are still some left on the shelves.
It might be a long wait before these are made again.

That exact iteration of knife is now consigned to the dustbin of history. The only place to find them is on the secondary market with all the challenges that entails. If you want one, be quick to pounce and ready to pay up. While GEC will likely bring back the talon in time, they no longer offer stag covers with shields. Too big of a PITA.

If yer hung up on GEC then you're in for a long search. BUT to tide you over until you find one, you might try a Sway Back from Case - various covers available.

Thanks JohnDF JohnDF , I have looked but am also struggling with finding any.

kamagong kamagong I am not hung up on it having a shield, so maybe just sit tight, eh? I am very new to traditional knives other than the Case knives I had in my youth. So far, I have been impressed with GEC.

Modoc ED Modoc ED thanks for the idea to try out a Case in that design.

Are you more interested in the blade shape, the handle shape, or the combination of both? If you are considering the Case swayback, you may also want to look at the Viper swayback. Available in micarta, grey oak, and stag (I thought the stag was sold out but Mike's site shows them in stock):

I am afraid that your chances of finding one just like your picture is pretty slim . I got this one in 2016 and at that time they had stopped putting Shields on them . It does have the Wharncliffe Blade . Not many people will sell theirs and neither would I at this time .

There are a very few left of the latest run of the 92's at a very few of the dealers . I would suggest you get one of them . None of them have the Wharncliffe Blade . The Case Swayback is a little shorter than the GEC 92 . Good Luck in your quest my friend .

Apparently they got more in stock, CK just posted a pic on Instagram.
You cant go wrong with this one, great blade steel too. Highly recommended.

wickettedge wickettedge ... if you want to try the 92 pattern with the spear and coping (as John suggested), if you go to the fourth dealer down here (https://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/2020/01/24/dealers) there are a couple left. It's a fantastic knife, in my opinion, but I like spear blades in general. They are getting sparse on the shelves now.

Also have seen great reviews of the Viper that others are posting, and the Case is a classic.

Well, just to up my post count  I agree with what has been said here. The Viper sold by Mike at Collector Knives is supposed to be VERY nicely made, and it will cost you way less than a Talon, IF you can find a Talon, that is. The Case Swayback, gent and jack, are very nicely made, as well.

OR, I suppose, if you really have to have the Eureka handle shape, you could buy the cheapest 2019 version of the Eureka Jack you can find, and have one of our knife mechanics on here change it over to a pseudo-talon. Just a thought.

keep your eyes open on the f/s of the traditionals. they do pop up eventually, I remember suggesting to some one to watch for the 99 in wharncliffe and sure enough that did pop up a few weeks back. hopefully they got it. Wait for it long enough and itll appear. Once upon a time, it was the 77 stag jack for me and boy was it frustrating to miss it by minutes, but eventually down the road, I ended up with three to choose from. Keep your eyes peeled! The journey is always the fun part of collecting!
