Hello knife people. I wanna dye my southard handle scale from the dreary brown that it is to black, I was told by someone to sue RIT dye. Can anyone who has already done this or who knows of someone who's done this confirm this or suggest something better? I really don't wanna mess it up as I obviously wont be able to replace the scale
thanks!

Yeah making black is the easiest. I just boil water with the RIT powder in it and suspend the scale in the solution. With black you can leave it in for a long time to ensure a bold black. Doing other colors are tricky with when to take it out to get the right shade. I tried a navy blue and it is more like a midnight blue/black.

Doesn't that void the warranty?

Damage due to disassembly will void it so as long as you dont do any thing wrong you are all good :) and like nccole said black is the easiest if you plan on other colors keep an eye on it and check regularly

IIRC, to remove the Southard scales just remove the three screws and pivot screw on the scale side, the scale should just fall off. That way you are minimizing your chances of messing anything up by not going further into dis-assembly.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone picture. I used some really old Navy Blue liquid rit dye laying around.
