Need some advice

Welcome to Bladeforums! Check out the Sharpening FAQ here. You can pick up a decent stone for $10-$15, or go with the Spyderco Sharpmaker for around $50. The key to freehand, if you choose to go that route, is practice. Also, you can make a strop out of a piece of 2x4, a manila folder, and a stick of metal polish, available at any Lowe's or Home Depot. Just tape or staple a piece of the folder to the 2x4, then rub the metal polish stick on it and strop away, with the edge trailing. It works very well, I've acheived some of the sharpest edges ever for me using this approach. Good luck, and feel free to e-mail me if you have any more questions. I like sharpening and discussing methods, so it isn't an imposition.

I know $50 might seem a lot to sharpen a $30 knife, but you'll buy more soon. Just watch..... :D
The spyderco system is really, really, really worth it.

Chipest way (free):
1. Any stone you may find around.
2. Bottom of a tea cup (ceramic).
3. You thumb skin.
Thanks, Vassili.

Try a cheap wal-mart bench stone (get the finer grits) and get a strop and loading compound. I use my strop to cheat on my sharpening skills - now all my knives shave, even if they didn't off the bench stone....
