I bought this fat ash about a month or two ago. I have to say that it is awesome. It has been up armored in the snake skin boa pattern. I love the pattern on the magnum g10 but wish the knife was a satin finish. I called up armor and asked about their process and they said that they media blast all Busse knives before they coat with their special paint. Looking at the finish with a jewellers loupe it doesn't appear to have been media blasted, it still has the krinkle wrinkle appearance. So do I strip it myself then sand it to a satin finish then send it back to up armor or do I just try to trade it for a satin fat ash. The hybrid kydex leather sheath has been done on both sides as well.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks Hogs

Send Garth at the Custom Shop an email. I'm sure he'll fix you up just right!!

Here's your pics to make it easier to view.

I agree, send these pics to Garth ( garth at bussecombat dot com) and see if the shop can help you out.

I contacted them , I can't rule out that it wasnt double cut originally, they won't do a BIG finish on anything that has been double cut. Because I don't know,I don't want to waste their time.

Thanks for the resizing, I tried, it's possible I'm dumber than I think I am. Quite possible....

Has anyone else had any experience stripping the up armored knives?

I've talked to Busse already, so I was hoping to get other options or opinions, I always ask Busse first, before asking anyone else.

If it were me... I would call Busse and get some help/pointers on removing the scales. Then I'd hit it with a wire brush grinder to remove the finish. Then I'd apply whatever finish I wanted - satin, etc. Then put the scales back on, maybe taking the opportunity to change the pins.

ok, i just looked into up armor. this dura coat appears to not be easy to remove. there are some suggestions on the various gun related forums I've found. some people suggest regular paint stripper... good luck and let us know how it goes!

I've had excellent success with the jasco paint stripper, but I didn't want to harm the coating on the handles, I would love to preserve the pattern. That I why I might strip it then send it back to have the g10 re painted.

Or maybe I put it up for trade in the exchange, maybe someone with a satin fatty wants to trade?

I'd take those scales off and send the bunch to the shop. Explain you want the handles to remain the same. I'm sure they'd hook you up.

In looking at the knife more closely, it is a full flat grind fat ash, what is the likelihood that a full flat grind would be double cut as well. Most double cut ash I see are sabre grind. Is this correct? Or am I wrong....

I would just sand it off if you don't need it to look too pretty. I just strip past the plunge line, then sand it however much I feel like.

I'd leave it alone and find another. It looks great as is or with wear. Nothing wrong with your original vision.

I love it, it's super thick and totally unique, I think my wants take me to a bigger Busse at this thickness. I'm thinking NMFSH. I've got seconds on the one on the exchange. I hope like hell something happens. I want it.
