Well I want to say hello to the newest board I belong to and say thank you for the information I have already received just from looking around.
I have an issue, well we all do in different ways. I am looking for a knife with the following qualities.
1. Approx 14" blade length sharpend on both sides if possible or at least at the clip point.
2. Heavy weight for chopping, about 1lb or so would be good.
3. Blade that does not bend for prying and digging.
4. Must retain an edge.
I stress #4 as I have an extremely old, heavy, huge knife. The makers name has worn off, it's about 100 years old. It weighs in at about 2lbs and is about 14" blade length. Rusts to all heck which I love. I have hacked into concrete while digging, steel pipes, other junk and it does hold quite an edge. I only know it was made in Hartford CT. and has a serial number on it. Handle has been rebuilt many times. This is really a do it all knife and I love it sans weight and lack of sheath.
I'm looking for something like the "Cold Steel Trailmaster or their bowie since I can slip it into my belt while working. Now they show great videos and such but I believe in real world testing. I have seen the Swamp Rat knives and others that have videos that show amazing things. I just find it a bit difficult to cough up 500 bucks for the Waki Rodent, plus the blade bending thing bothers me.
I like the edge retention they show after cutting down trees and then slicing newsprint and such.
I'm not a collector by any means, what I own is what I use, like my guns. I don't buy one unless I use it, hence no collecting. And if the finsh comes off I don't care as long as it's durable under the conditions I said before.
Any help would be really appreciated.
